Father and Son Travel Together Before Heartbreaking Airport Incident Shocks Nevada Community
A father and his young son hit the road together, headed for a destination they would never reach. But the stop they had to make at a small Nevada airport would leave an entire community without answers.
On April 13, 2026, Giovanni Perez and his 11-year-old son, Callan West Perez, were stranded on the side of a Nevada highway and scrambling to find a way forward when their story ended in a way no one could have predicted. Or maybe, in hindsight, they should have.

A Trip With No Clear Destination
The two set out on the road together, headed toward the Reno, Nevada area, though investigators never pinned down exactly why. However, somewhere outside Winnemucca, their rental vehicle broke down, and they were towed to the nearest city with an airport: Elko.
The plan was simple enough. They would swap the broken rental for another one and keep moving. But that never happened.
That Monday, at 12:38 p.m., officers with the Elko Police Department were dispatched to the Elko Regional Airport following reports of an active shooter.
What they discovered after arriving was more than devastating.
What Officers Found Inside
Near the airline ticket counter, a man lay deceased. He was later identified as Giovanni. But even worse, bystanders immediately directed officers toward the airport restrooms.
Inside, Callan was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Fire and EMS personnel rushed in and began life-saving measures before taking him to North Eastern Nevada Regional Hospital.
Unfortunately, the boy did not survive.
After thorough investigations, authorities managed to piece together what happened, although the facts don't fully explain everything.
According to the Elko Police Department, Giovanni and Callan had entered the restroom together once, came back out, and then returned a second time.
It was during that second visit that Giovanni shot his son.
He then walked out and turned the weapon on himself near the ticket counter, shocking everyone around and halting operations at the airport for almost a full day.

The Father Behind the Incident
The police went through the proper procedures, releasing statements online, and on April 15, they provided an update that added just a bit of context to the situation.
Their findings revealed that Giovanni had reportedly claimed he was suffering from PTSD stemming from his military service. Detectives were working to verify the details of this part of his background.

According to Callan's mother, Giovanni spent approximately four years as a cook in the U.S. Army, a tenure that included a deployment to Iraq.
Speaking to KUTV, she explained that despite being separated from Callan for several years, she maintained regular contact with him over the phone and was working on regaining custody of her son.

Police also revealed that this custody dispute was also against Callan's maternal grandparents, as Giovannia had apparently been trying to keep the boy away from both sides of his family.
Although some major things have been revealed, no motive for the shooting has been established, and investigators acknowledged they may never know why Callan's life was taken.

A Boy Remembered Far Beyond This Moment
Before this incident, Callan had been a fourth-grade student at Luther Burbank Elementary School in Merced, California. The Merced City School District confirmed he was no longer enrolled for the current school year and described the situation as "an unimaginable tragedy."
Interestingly, just the year before, Callan had placed third in a school essay contest for "Father of the Year."

A GoFundMe organized by Kristen Miramontes for the family has raised over $13,000 toward a $16,000 goal, as of this publication. The description reads:
"It is with shattered hearts that we are asking for help for our family during the most unimaginable loss. Our sweet Callan West Perez, only 11 years old, was taken from us at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect him."

The family revealed that Callan was an "incredibly smart, funny, and kind, wise beyond his years," with a smile that lit up every room.
Aside from helping with the funeral costs, the fundraiser is also meant to support a future legal fight. In the family's words, they want "to pursue justice in his name, against a system that failed him and to give a voice to other children that are not being protected."
A Grandfather's Grief, Shared Publicly
In the days since, Giovanni's father, Frank Perez, has been posting quietly on Facebook, sharing photos of Callan, including some with his brother Noah Perez at a dinosaur park.
In one post, he wrote, "R.I.P. Callan West Perez. This is Callan and his brother Noah his best friend, Noah misses his dad and brother, they meant the world to him, Callan and Noah love dinosaurs 🦕."

On April 23, Frank posted a tribute to his son Giovanni as well, writing, "Rest in Peace Giovanni Perez, may you finally be at peace, we love you dearly."
But the post that gave many readers pause came from April 21. Frank shared a photo of Giovanni, Callan, and Noah together, smiling near a fair booth, alongside a message that tried to hold two truths at once.

"Giovanni and Callan will be buried at Santa Nella military cemetery," he wrote, adding that both would receive full military honors. "Giovanni provided well for all his sons, including full university funding. His battle with mental illness does not reflect on the great father and son he was."

For now, the investigation remains open. We offer our condolences to the Perez family and all those affected by this terrible tragedy.
Sadly, a similar case occurred just days ago. A quiet Louisiana neighborhood is reeling after an incident that claimed eight young lives, but the most haunting details may lie in what was heard before anyone truly understood what was happening.
Because while the aftermath is devastating, it's the moments leading up to it that are now raising the most chilling questions.

A Community in Shock
A shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, on April 19, 2026, left eight children dead and two others injured — an incident authorities say involved someone within the home.
Authorities have begun outlining what happened, as someone in the neighborhood described the sudden chaos.

What Investigators Have Pieced Together
Police in Shreveport responded to reports of a shooting involving multiple victims, according to NBC News. Investigators said the gunman shot 10 people in total, killing eight children and wounding two women.
Authorities identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins, the children’s father. Seven of the children were found inside the residence, while an eighth was discovered on the back roof.
The victims were three boys and five girls, according to the Caddo Parish Coroner’s office. They were later identified as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5, according to the New York Post.
Additionally, two women were wounded in the shooting, including Shamar's wife, Shaneiqua Elkins, who was shot in the face and survived, and another woman believed to be his girlfriend.
A teenager was also reportedly injured after falling from the roof, but did not suffer gunshot wounds. As investigators continued examining the case, officials said the motive remains unclear.
The Timeline That Started to Unfold
But while neighbors were trying to process the chaos, investigators were already piecing together a much more detailed — and deeply troubling — timeline. According to NBC News, the first call came in around 5:55 a.m. The caller said they were on top of a house, claiming a suspect was inside and that a man had been shot.
Minutes later, another call added a chilling layer: the suspect was a relative, and nearly nine people were inside the home. The caller believed the suspect had "shot everyone inside the home."

Panic, Escape, and Escalation
At 6 a.m., a woman called again — this time saying she and her children had fled to the backyard after escaping the roof. Officers arrived within minutes and made contact.
But the situation was rapidly expanding. At 6:07 a.m., another call reported a woman had been shot by her boyfriend, who then fled with her children.
By 6:15 a.m., a carjacking had been reported. Soon after, officers spotted the vehicle and initiated a pursuit. At 6:29 a.m., police encountered the suspect, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
He was pronounced dead at 7:03 a.m. "This by far was probably one of the most challenging incidents that SPD has ever faced," Police Chief Wayne Smith said.
But as the timeline came into focus, investigators began uncovering what may have already been set in motion inside the home long before those calls were made

What Was Happening Behind the Scenes
According to AP News, Shamar and his wife were in the middle of separating and were due in court on Monday.
Crystal Brown, a cousin of one of the wounded women, said the couple had been arguing about the separation before the shooting. "He murdered his children," Crystal said. "He shot his wife."
Shamar shared four children with his wife and three children with another woman who lived close by and who was also shot, Crystal said. All the children were together at one house. The cousin described them as "happy kids, very friendly, very sweet."
The 911 Call That Still Echoes
Up until this point, the timeline is devastating — but still clinical. Then comes the 911 audio, and everything changes. In a recording shared on YouTube, a dispatcher relayed what was being reported in real time:
"The female is saying there's nine subjects that live inside the residence, and he may have shot them all."
That wasn't hindsight. That was someone trying to make sense of the unimaginable as it was happening. Moments later, another line followed:
"They have a female with a gunshot wound to the face. Assailant left the scene."
That's the moment the story shifts — from tragedy to something far more chilling: a real-time realization that everything may already have been lost.
What Officers Found Inside the Home
And when officers finally entered the home, the reality was even more devastating than those calls had suggested. A spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department, Christopher Bordelon, told NBC News it was an "evil and disgusting scene."
"It is a disgusting and evil scene," he said. The suspect's wife and another woman believed to be his girlfriend were both seriously wounded.
"We know it's domestic in nature, we know his wife is involved, and she is the mother of at least seven of the children, with the eighth being a family friend," he added.

Authorities said a small-caliber handgun was used in part of the violence, and Shamar was armed with a rifle-style pistol when officers confronted him. Officers later confronted Shamar and fatally shot him, bringing the immediate threat to an end.
Authorities also reported that many of the children appeared to have been shot while asleep, most sustaining gunshot wounds to the head.
But while the 911 call captured the chaos in real time, what surfaced afterward was even more unsettling — just days earlier, everything had appeared normal.
A Glimpse Into Their Facebook Activity
Before the shooting, Shamar remained active on Facebook, sharing moments from his daily life that often centered on his children, though his profile listed little personal information beyond his gender.
Just days before the incident, he posted a photo of his eldest child sitting in the front seat of a vehicle and eating a burger during what he described as a one-on-one outing.
Back on April 6, he shared a photo of himself standing outside a home with several children, dressed for Easter, and gathered closely together.
Earlier posts took on a more introspective tone.
In one post dated April 9, he shared a lengthy prayer centered on strength, peace, and protection. In another post from March 12, he shared a short message that read, "Understand to be misunderstood."
On February 13, he shared a photo showing several children sitting on the floor inside a home, gathered closely around large open trays of food as they ate together during a casual group meal.
Like Shamar, Shaneiqua also maintained an active presence on the same platform.
Her profile listed her as living in Shreveport, Louisiana, indicated that the couple had been married since April 9, 2024, and showed that she attended Independence University.
Her page included a mix of personal details and reposted content, including a pinned post emphasizing her focus on prayer and faith.
More recent activity included reposted content, such as a message referencing her zodiac sign, Aries, as well as shared videos. Her profile reflected regular engagement through short captions and reposts rather than lengthy personal updates.
Their posts offered a window into their lives in the days leading up to the incident, but for those nearby, the events took a far different turn.
Neighbor Recalls Chaos
As reported by KSLA 12 News, a nearby resident described the moment the violence unfolded, recalling confusion and shock as the situation escalated.
"My thought process was like, man, there's no way that that just happened behind our house. You know, it was, I was just in total shock. I was just like, oh my God, dude. Like, it was just chaos. I mean, honestly like, it was just nothing like I’ve ever experienced," Jacob Castleman said.
Jacob said he woke up to his wife telling him she heard sirens and possibly a gunshot.
"And then I set up and we heard another gunshot. And I was like, all right, that's pretty close. So as I got up, we heard several more fires. And then I went and grabbed my firearm and checked out the back because that's where I thought everything was coming from," he said.

Authorities have not yet determined what led up to the shooting, as they continue working to establish a clearer sequence of events.
In the aftermath, the loss of eight young lives has left a lasting impact on the community, with many still searching for answers in the wake of the tragedy.

The Questions That Remain
In the aftermath, the loss of eight young lives has left a lasting impact on the community, with many still searching for answers. Because even with timelines, statements, and evidence, one detail continues to stand out.
It wasn't just what happened — it was how quickly it unfolded, and how, in those first moments, someone on the other end of a 911 call may have already understood the full weight of what was happening. And tragically, in that moment, they already knew the truth before anyone else did.
