The senator's unexpected death came after several public threats and a politically sensitive trip abroad. Although officials have offered a preliminary medical explanation, one commentator believes investigators must determine whether an adversary was involved.

Lindsey Graham died suddenly on Saturday night, July 11, 2026, at age 71. Hours after his office confirmed the news, Laura Loomer began connecting his death to hostile statements made shortly before his final trip home.

Tributes Followed the Sudden Announcement

Graham represented South Carolina and spent three decades in Congress, where he became widely known for his forceful positions on foreign policy.

Following the announcement, President Donald Trump and lawmakers from both parties paid tribute to Graham. They remembered both his political record and the close friendships he had formed during his years in Washington.

His office initially described his death as following a "brief and sudden illness." But before the full preliminary medical findings became public, Loomer argued that the circumstances surrounding his final days required greater scrutiny.

Loomer Connects His Death to Recent Threats

In one of her July 12 posts, Loomer focused on a reported threat from Iran and Graham’s movements during the final days of his life.

She wrote that five days before his death, Graham had posted about threats from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to Loomer, IRGC operatives at the funeral of late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei displayed matching posters featuring Graham, Trump, and Loomer.

The images allegedly called for their assassination. She then shifted to Graham’s recent travel. The senator had returned from Ukraine one day before his death after discussing continued U.S. assistance and stronger sanctions against Russia.

Loomer also noted that Russia had sent a delegation to Khamenei’s funeral. She presented that detail alongside Graham’s support for Ukraine and his pressure campaign against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The ring-wing political commentator added that Russia had recently threatened to supply Iran with nuclear weapons. She treated those details as part of the same chain of events, linking Iran's alleged threat, Russia's presence at the funeral, Graham's Ukraine trip, and his death shortly after returning home.

Her conclusion was direct: "This doesn’t feel like a coincidence."

However, the post did not provide evidence that Iran, Russia, or anyone else had caused Graham’s death. Loomer was presenting a theory based on several factors, including the United States' latest foreign policy decisions.

Laura Loomer speculated about what happened because there was very little information on July 12. At this event, she gathered outside the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. United States Federal Courthouse where former President Donald Trump was scheduled to be arraigned later in the day on June 13, 2023, in Miami, Florida. | Source: Getty Images

Her Second Post Goes Further into the Theory of Foul Play

Later that day, Loomer made a second post that moved beyond suspicion and explicitly raised the possibility of poisoning. She began by referring back to her earlier claim that authorities should investigate whether these countries were involved.

"Earlier I said it should be investigated if Iran or Russia poisoned Senator Lindsey Graham who suddenly died last night very unexpectedly," she wrote.

Loomer then introduced remarks attributed to Alexander Dugin, a Russian political philosopher and nationalist commentator. She noted that Dugin had allegedly called for Graham to be "flattened" exactly four months earlier.

The claim came from a post by political commentator Ryan Mauro, who said Dugin made the statement earlier this year. Mauro wrote, "ALEXANDER DUGIN SAID ‘LINDSEY GRAHAM HAS TO BE FLATTEN[ED]’ ON MARCH 12."

According to Mauro, Dugin had also called for the destruction of a United States shaped by Graham’s foreign policy. Mauro further claimed that Dugin singled Graham out as one of the leaders of the "Antichrist" in his predictions about Russia, Iran, and China defeating their enemies during the End Times.

He also said Dugin accused Graham of trying to persuade Trump to begin a nuclear war with Russia to distract from the Epstein files. Loomer used those claims to strengthen her argument that Graham had been the target of unusually aggressive rhetoric from figures hostile to his policies.

She then returned to Graham’s final trip. Loomer noted that he had come back from Ukraine the previous day after meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky about further American support and his proposal for increased sanctions on Russia.

She said the White House supported Graham’s sanctions plan. After laying out those details, Loomer demanded official action. "There needs to be an investigation and a toxicology report!" she wrote, tagging the Secret Service and the White House.

However, no official source has said Graham was poisoned, and again, there is no confirmed evidence connecting Iran or Russia to his death. Loomer’s allegation remains speculation. But she's not alone in her suspicions.

Other Commentators Question the Timing

Several other right-wing commentators also called for a closer examination of Graham's death, though their theories and levels of certainty varied.

Joey Mannarino focused on the reported Iranian threat and how recently Graham had returned from Ukraine. In a July 12 post, he wrote, "Iran threatened to kill Lindsey Graham just five days ago and now he's dead with zero explanation."

He continued, "He was just in Ukraine too. Literally 24 hours ago. And he looked completely fine. Really odd stuff. They need to run an autopsy on this man immediately."

Attorney and political commentator Rogan O'Handley acknowledged that Graham could have died from natural causes. "In all likelihood, Lindsey Graham died of natural causes for a man over 70," he wrote in his own post.

Still, he pointed to Graham's recent visit to a Ukrainian drone factory, his support for new sanctions on Russia, and his aggressive position toward Iran.

He also referenced Graham's work on voter identification legislation and his support for the COVID-19 vaccine. O'Handley argued that Graham had made enemies both abroad and within the United States. "His death should be fully investigated," he concluded.

Matt Van Swol, a former nuclear scientist for the U.S. Department of Energy, according to his bio, also questioned how Graham could appear healthy shortly before his death.

In his own post, he wrote, "I'm sorry, but Lindsey Graham dying out of the blue like this doesn't make any sense at all. We have him on camera yesterday looking perfectly healthy."

Of course, appearing healthy in a public video does not rule out a serious internal medical condition. And more details released by Graham's office soon provided a specific explanation for his sudden death.

Medical Findings Identify an Aortic Dissection

Preliminary findings from the D.C. medical examiner's office determined that Graham suffered an aortic dissection.

An aortic dissection occurs when a tear develops in the inner layer of the body's main artery. Graham's office said the tear was caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Such tears frequently occur in people with high blood pressure and can become fatal very quickly.

The Washington Post reported that the preliminary findings supported a cardiovascular explanation for Graham's death. Nothing in the medical information released so far points to poisoning or foreign involvement.

However, the official review has not been fully completed. Graham's office said the death certificate will remain pending until toxicological and microscopic tests are finalized. The certificate will then be updated to state the official cause and classify the manner of death.

Unless the remaining tests reveal another factor, Graham's death is expected to remain attributed to the cardiovascular condition identified by the medical examiner.

But the senator's death created another urgent question in Washington. As news of Graham's passing circulated, attention eventually turned to who could take his place, and the decision seems to have been made.

As previously reported, during a July 13 news conference outside his office at the South Carolina State House in Columbia, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster referred to this moment as both his duty and an honor, according to the Associated Press.

McMaster opened the announcement by reflecting on Graham's legacy, calling him an "irreplaceable" and "extraordinary" public servant. He then hinted that the person chosen to succeed him shared a lifelong connection with the late senator.

Moments later, McMaster announced that Graham's younger sister, Darline Graham Nordone, had been chosen to serve the remainder of his Senate term. "It's my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now," McMaster said.

Nordone is expected to serve until the term ends in January 2027. Senate Majority Leader John Thune also said the swearing-in would take place Tuesday afternoon.

The New Appointee Promised to Continue Lindsey Graham's Work

In her first public remarks, Nordone remembered her brother, calling him "the most amazing person, outstanding leader and just a genuinely good man."

She said he devoted his life to serving South Carolina and the United States, working tirelessly on behalf of the people he represented. She then shifted her focus from remembrance to the work that lies ahead.

"It is such a privilege to get to finish some of his important work," Nordone said, according to AP. "I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States."

The appointment also carries historic significance.

According to the media outlet, Nordone becomes the first woman to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate, making McMaster's deeply personal choice a milestone for the state's political history as well.

The President's Endorsement Came Before the Governor Made His Decision

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump said he had recommended Graham's "wonderful sister" to McMaster, calling the appointment "a fabulous tribute to Lindsey," whom he said "loved her dearly."

The recommendation quickly drew support from Senator Tim Scott.

On X, Scott expressed support for Nordone's appointment, writing that after speaking with her, he believed she best understood Graham's love for his family, South Carolina, and the country.

Nordone has never held elected office. As reported by Fox News, she is a mother of two who previously worked in vocational rehabilitation, helping people with disabilities find employment across South Carolina.

Lindsey Graham Had Already Shared Why He Trusted His Sister

After both of their parents died less than a year apart, Graham became his younger sister's legal guardian while still in his early 20s. The loss brought the siblings even closer, with Graham taking on the role of both brother and caregiver.

During his 2015 presidential campaign, Graham reflected on that bond in an interview with C-SPAN. He said watching his sister build a successful life after losing both parents at age 13 remained "the highlight" of his own life.

He also said he believed Nordone would represent the country well if she were ever called to serve.

"She would be a support network for me. I didn't really thought much about it, but at the end of the day, whatever I ask her to do, she would do, and if she took a role on, she would be a great representative of our country. I can't think of a better person to represent our country in an event than my sister." Graham said during the interview.

While South Carolina turns its focus toward this historic Senate transition, the pending toxicology tests will soon provide the definitive word on the medical examiner's findings. Ultimately, those final results will determine whether the senator's sudden loss remains a tragic medical event or if the speculation spun by Loomer warrants any real-world footing.
