Over the years, Lenny Kravitz has opened the doors of his two most personal homes, and inside one sits a room built entirely around a woman he says shaped his entire life.

The Grammy-winning musician walked cameras through his Paris mansion, a home filled with rare art, family photographs, and design choices tied to decades of memory. Hidden downstairs is a space most viewers didn't expect to find in a house so steeped in family history.

Between his home in France and a working farm he owns in Brazil, Kravitz has built two spaces that swing between polished elegance and rustic simplicity, each shaped by the people who mattered most to him growing up. The story behind one particular room, and what's tucked beneath the house's floors, has fans talking.

A 1989 Move That Turned Into a Permanent Home

Kravitz first landed in Paris in 1989, at 25, to promote his debut album, "Let Love Rule." He fell for the city immediately, calling it his favorite in the world for its music, art, fashion, and food.

By the early 2000s, he decided he wanted a small pied-à-terre there, maybe one or two bedrooms along the Seine. Instead, a real estate agent showed him the mansion of Countess Anne d'Ornano, a widowed former mayor who was ready to leave the property behind.

"I pull up, she points at the building, I said, 'Okay, what floor?' thinking it's an apartment building. And she says, 'It's the whole thing,'" Kravitz recalled to Architectural Digest. He initially refused to even go inside, but changed his mind. The moment he walked through the door, he knew it was his.

Room by Room Inside Hôtel de Roxie

Kravitz has now lived in the house for 22 years, slowly building it into a reflection of his own design philosophy, which he calls "soulful elegance."

But one room stands apart from the rest of the house.

The Room He Built for His Mother

The petit salon, tucked just off the grand salon, is known as the Roxy Room. It is dedicated entirely to his mother, actress Roxie Roker, who played Helen Willis on "The Jeffersons" for 11 seasons.

"This is the petit salon. It's dedicated to my mother. She was love of my life [sic]. I was a mama's boy," Kravitz said on the tour. He filled the walls with photographs his father had taken of Roker in the late 1960s, framed by the same framer used by the Louvre.

One image in particular holds special weight for him: a photo from Central Park, where Roker used to sit and read Langston Hughes' poetry aloud while a street musician played guitar nearby. Kravitz has called it one of the deepest impressions he carries of her.

The tribute doesn't stop at that one room. His grandfather, Albert Roker, watches over the dining room from a Ruven Afanador portrait, and Kravitz says he feels his presence every day he eats there. The entire house, in fact, is now named Hôtel de Roxie, after his mother's unfulfilled dream of retiring in Paris.

He has said the same in other interviews over the years. Speaking to People about his mother, Kravitz shared, "I know that I wouldn't be here if it weren't for her and all those who came before me." He has also said he still turns on reruns of "The Jeffersons" whenever he misses her.

Roker passed away more than three decades ago, but her influence runs through Kravitz's 2020 memoir as well, "Let Love Rule," which he dedicated to her.

What's Hiding in the Basement

Upstairs, the house feels like a museum of Kravitz's life: a library filled with his mother's old African art books and James Brown's stage boots.

How Fans Reacted to the Paris Tour

The Paris video drew a wave of comments, many circling back to the basement reveal and Kravitz's age. "When he said i'm going to take you the basement. The heart and Soul of the House. I did not expect a full blown club 🤣," one viewer wrote, while another simply said, "My jaw dropped when he opened the club!"

A Very Different Life in Brazil

While Paris reflects decades of curated history, Kravitz's second home couldn't look more different. About a decade ago, while on tour in Brazil, he was invited to visit a countryside property just before he was set to fly home.

He ended up staying six months. "I ended up staying for six months. It was extraordinary. I just dropped out of life, learned to ride horses from the cowboys, learned about farming, and reconnected with nature," Kravitz told Architectural Digest.

Two years later, he bought the land outright: an 18th-century coffee plantation spanning nearly 1,000 acres outside Rio de Janeiro. Unlike the Paris mansion, the farm is a working property, producing organic fruits and vegetables that feed everyone who visits, including his band during rehearsal trips.

For Kravitz, both properties serve the same purpose in different forms: one built to honor where he came from, the other built to remind him how far reconnecting with something simpler can take him.
