Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber's Decades-Long Marriage Endured Five Major Life Struggles — Photos
noThe famously private couple stayed together through crises that rarely matched their polished public image, and their photos reveal just how much nearly four decades can change.
Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber, both now 74, married in 1987 and are approaching their 40th anniversary. Their relationship survived painful family disputes, professional sacrifices, public controversy, and private grief, but the photographs of how they've changed over the years have inspired a completely different conversation online.

Their Differences Became Part of the Formula
Harmon and Dawber were already in their 30s when they exchanged vows, something the "NCIS" star believes helped them avoid bringing some youthful mistakes into their marriage. Speaking to People in 2019, Harmon offered a practical explanation for their staying power.
"We were both in our thirties when we got married, so hopefully the stupid stuff we did earlier," he said. "That's probably the closest I have to what the key is."

Mark Harmon once shared what he thought was the key to their longevity. On this occasion, he and Pam Dawber posed at the 44th Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 31, 1987, in Los Angeles, California. | Source: Getty Images
They also learned that agreeing on everything was unnecessary. Dawber opposed Harmon's decision to play eccentric teacher Freddy Shoop in the 1987 comedy "Summer School," while he considered the chance to work with director Carl Reiner too valuable to reject.
Harmon explained, "That was a game changer for me, like, 'He thinks I can do this?!' and that meant a lot. But Pam said, 'Don't do that. Don't do this movie.'"

She did not want him to take that particular role. At this event, they attended the American Cinematheque Awards Honoring Robin Williams on May 6, 1988, in Los Angeles, California. | Source: Getty Images
Rather than allowing those differences to divide them, Harmon viewed them as an advantage. "We don't generally like the same thing, and that's been healthy for us, actually," he said.
That ability to disagree without pulling apart would soon be tested by something far more serious. During their first year of marriage, the couple became involved in a bitter custody dispute within Harmon's own family.

1. A Custody Fight Divided Harmon's Family
In 1987, Harmon sought custody of his 12-year-old nephew, Sam, whose mother was his sister, Kristin Nelson. Nelson, the former wife of late musician Rick Nelson, had entered treatment for dependency on prescription drugs, and Sam stayed with Harmon and Dawber while she completed rehabilitation.

The dispute ended in August when Harmon withdrew his custody request. According to the Los Angeles Times, the brother and sister left the Los Angeles County Courthouse with their arms around each other, suggesting that reconciliation had begun.
"Sam's coming home," Nelson told reporters. She said she and Sam would attend family counseling and that everyone involved would work toward improving the situation. Harmon received visitation rights under the agreement.

But the custody battle ended the same year it started. At this event, they attended the 15th Annual People's Choice Awards at Disney Studios on March 12, 1989, in Burbank, California. | Source: Getty Images
The arrangement ended the court battle, but the couple had little time to settle into a quieter life. Two years later, Dawber lost a young co-star whom she had come to love like family.
2. Dawber Lost Someone Who Felt Like a Sister
Rebecca Schaeffer played the younger sister of Dawber's character on "My Sister Sam," which aired from 1986 to 1988. Their connection continued away from the cameras, with Dawber inviting the teenage actress to stay at the Los Angeles home she shared with Harmon before their wedding.

"We just kind of fell into this sisterly thing," Dawber recalled in a 2019 interview with ABC News. The bond carried extra meaning because Dawber's own sister had died at 22, when Dawber was 25.
Having another young woman in the house felt natural to her, and she proudly watched Schaeffer begin to reap the rewards of a successful television career. "I was thrilled that she was getting to really, really enjoy...a big show biz life," Dawber said.

Schaeffer eventually moved into her own home, first in Laurel Canyon and later in West Hollywood. Dawber had warned her about something important. "The one thing we did say to her, though: 'You never put your real name on your mailbox, Rebecca.' … And she didn't listen to that," Dawber recalled.
Dawber understood the danger personally after experiencing frightening attention from a stalker. She used her business manager's address on her driver's license, so her home could not easily be found.

Robert Bardo became fixated on Schaeffer after seeing her in a 1986 promotion for "My Sister Sam." He watched her television appearances, sent letters, and traveled from Arizona to the Los Angeles studio where the sitcom was filmed, although security prevented him from meeting her.
After the show was canceled, Bardo became enraged by a romantic scene Schaeffer performed in the 1989 movie "Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills." He obtained a gun through his brother and traveled alone from Tucson to Los Angeles.

A private investigator secured Schaeffer's West Hollywood address from the Department of Motor Vehicles records. On July 18, 1989, Bardo arrived at her apartment while she was waiting for a script ahead of an audition for "The Godfather III."
Schaeffer initially spoke to him politely and returned inside. Bardo later came back and fatally shot her after she told him he was wasting her time. He was arrested the following day and later convicted of first-degree murder. Bardo was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Justice came, but it did not change the tragic loss of Rebecca Schaeffer. At this event, they attended the National Hero Awards on October 14, 1994, in Los Angeles, California. | Source: Getty Images
Dawber said she felt "rage" over how easily he had obtained Schaeffer's address. She also carried guilt because her own grief made it difficult to maintain contact with Schaeffer's parents. "I thought of Rebecca every day of my life probably for two years," she said. "But I couldn't keep diving in."
Dawber later reunited with the remaining "My Sister Sam" cast members to record a gun-control public service announcement. She also testified before Congress in support of stricter gun laws.

Schaeffer's murder helped lead California to enact the country's first anti-stalking law in 1990. Similar laws were eventually adopted in all 50 states.
As Dawber processed that loss, her priorities outside acting became even clearer. When she and Harmon began raising their sons, she made a decision that permanently changed the direction of her career.

The only bright side was that the tragedy led to better gun laws in California. On this occasion, Pam Dawber and Mark Harmon attended the "CableACE Awards" at the Wiltern Theatre on November 16, 1996, in Los Angeles, California. | Source: Getty Images
3. Dawber Stepped Away From Her Career
As Harmon continued working steadily, Dawber deliberately reduced her acting commitments. She believed that two demanding entertainment careers could have placed unnecessary pressure on their marriage.
"I don't think two people can work all the time in show business and stay married," she told Fox News in 2016.

Aside from starring in the hit sitcom "Mork & Mindy," she performed on Broadway, worked in musical theater, and voiced animated characters. After becoming a mother to sons Sean and Ty Harmon, however, pursuing another level of fame no longer appealed to her.
"I was in a number one show. I had my own deal. I got to do Broadway. I got to do musical theater. I got to do cartoon voices," she said. "I did everything you can do in this business, and then I had children and it's like, 'I'm not going to chase this fame thing.'"

Her last steady television role was voicing Perdy in "101 Dalmatians: The Series" in 1998. Dawber preferred being available for the ordinary moments of her sons' childhoods.
"I wanted to drive my kids to school. I wanted to be there for their birthdays and bring cupcakes and donuts and do the school festivals and all that, and I did," she explained.

She also wanted to protect the children from tabloid attention. Dawber considered their family life private and saw no reason to make the boys part of their parents' public careers. "Notice you don't see us in the magazines," she said. "When you're married, that's real life."
To the kids, she was simply their mother. Dawber even said her sons had not watched her work. "They don't care about what I did," she explained. "They care about what they are doing."

Protecting their children from the tabloids was also important to the couple. At this event, they attended the Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium on September 14, 2002, in Los Angeles, California. | Source: Getty Images
Dawber occasionally accepted carefully selected roles after her sons grew older. She reunited with Robin Williams on "The Crazy Ones" in 2014 after not seeing her former "Mork & Mindy" co-star for 20 years.
While Dawber kept the family anchored away from Hollywood's daily demands, Harmon's career continued at full speed. Years into his success on "NCIS," a dispute behind the scenes placed him under uncomfortable public scrutiny.

4. A Workplace Conflict Put Harmon Under Scrutiny
Harmon's long run on "NCIS" eventually brought controversy when viewers noticed that he and Pauley Perrette had stopped appearing together.
According to The Wrap, the tension followed a 2016 incident in which Harmon's dog bit a crew member, who reportedly needed 15 stitches. Perrette objected when the animal was allegedly allowed to return to work afterward.

And as the years went by, the changes on their faces were clearer to see. At this event, they attended the "23rd Annual Golden Boot Awards" at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on August 14, 2005, in Beverly Hills, California. | Source: Getty Images
Accounts differed over whether the dog returned and under what conditions. Harmon's attorney said the animal did not come back, while other sources claimed it was occasionally present on a leash or kept inside Harmon's trailer before he stopped bringing it altogether.
Several crew members were reportedly uncomfortable with the dog's presence but hesitant to challenge Harmon, who was both the show's lead actor and an executive producer. Perrette reportedly used her own influence to raise the issue.

The disagreement became serious enough that Harmon and Perrette were allegedly scheduled to film on different days. "She did her scenes on one day and he did his work on other days, and they still produced a great show," one insider claimed.
Their characters, Gibbs and Abby, had shared a close, almost father-daughter relationship on screen. However, Harmon and Perrette did not appear together in her final episode, which relied on earlier footage to revisit their characters' connection.

Perrette had announced her departure in October 2017, almost a year after the bite. The workplace dispute nevertheless became closely associated with her exit and placed Harmon at the center of an uncomfortable public controversy.
The conflict presented one version of Harmon to the public, but it was not the only one. Long before the "NCIS" tension, he had risked his own safety to rescue two teenagers from a burning car.

They had to use flashbacks in the final episodes, which only fueled more rumors. At this event, Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber arrived at TV Guide magazine's Annual Hot List Party at Greystone Mansion Supperclub on November 7, 2011, in Beverly Hills, California. | Source: Getty Images
Harmon's Heroic Rescue Revealed Another Side
On January 3, 1996, a car carrying two 16-year-old boys missed a turn near Harmon's Brentwood home in Los Angeles. It struck a tree, overturned, and burst into flames.
Harmon, then 44, used a sledgehammer to smash the vehicle's windows and pull both teenagers to safety. A Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson credited the actor with saving their lives. "The youths owe their lives to the action of Mr. Harmon," the spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times.

One teenager suffered severe burns over 30 percent of his body and was taken to UCLA Medical Center. The other sustained minor injuries and received treatment at St. John's Hospital and Health Center.
The rescue earned Harmon praise, but even heroic headlines could not prevent speculation about his private life. As the years passed, the couple's refusal to publicize their marriage allowed breakup rumors to keep returning.

5. Privacy Could Not Stop the Marriage Rumors
Harmon and Dawber rarely invited the public into their marriage, but their silence created room for gossip. Reports repeatedly claimed that the couple had separated, even as they quietly continued their life together.
"We're not trying to keep something secret, but if you don't want it totally exploited by the press, you have to," Dawber once said, according to Vocal.

They did not purposely decide to keep things secret, but they did not want their life to be exploited. The couple reportedly laughed at breakup stories and responded, "It must have been a slow news week."
Their privacy preference began with their wedding, which included only a small group of relatives and friends. They later kept their sons away from tabloid exposure and largely avoided turning their relationship into publicity material.

As more years passed, they both aged and their hair turned gray. At this event, Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber posed on set for the "NCIS" episode "Gut Punch" in Los Angeles, California, circa 2021. | Source: Getty Images
Harmon said staying home and out of the industry's social scene was simply part of who they were. Their commitment, rather than constant public displays, became the visible foundation of the marriage.
That restraint may explain why photographs of them over the years and now can attract so much attention. People are not merely looking at two celebrities, but at a real couple who have aged together.

But their more recent outings have stunned netizens, who could not recognize Mark Harmon. During this outing, he and Pam Dawber were seen at a flea market on June 30, 2024, in Santa Monica, California. | Source: Getty Images
On an Instagram post showing an outing from 2025, one commenter admired the pair and wrote, "Still a good looking couple [sic]." Another immediately noticed a difference in Harmon, adding, "Recognize her- Mark looks totally different [sic]."
A third person admitted, "I didn't recognize him," while another focused on Dawber and declared, "She's still hot 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥." Someone else simply praised their appearance together, writing, "They are such a beautiful couple!"

Harmon's transformation remained the biggest surprise for another commenter, who said, "That's Mark Harmon?? Do not recognize him but definitely his wife [sic]."
The reaction continued beneath another Instagram post. One person commented on the couple's longevity with modern relationships, writing, "Compare this wonderful marriage with the average marriage nowadays!!"
Another commenter credited their quiet lifestyle for Dawber's familiar appearance, saying, "Pam looks the exact same just different hair crazy that good quiet peaceful life will do that for you [sic]." Someone else agreed, writing, "She still looks exactly the same 😍."
One person noticed how similar the spouses now appeared and asked, "They even look like each other, is he really 74? [sic]." Another praised them both, adding, "And both aged gracefully 😍."
After nearly 40 years together, Harmon and Dawber remain firmly by each other's side, and it's clear that their marriage has lasted because they protected it from public pressure and continued choosing the life they built together.
