Sam Smith Dazzles with Major Life News Following Met Gala Appearance
The Grammy winner walked the Met Gala red carpet on Monday night wearing a jaw-dropping crystal-covered look, but the biggest news of their night had nothing to do with fashion.
Sam Smith, 33, showed up to the 2026 Met Gala on May 4 with someone very special on their arm, and it turns out the two had plenty more to celebrate than just killer outfits.

A Love Letter Dressed in Crystals
Smith and their partner of more than three years were overheard discussing their engagement at the Mark Hotel in New York City, just before making their way to the red carpet. Page Six broke the news exclusively, with a source at the hotel confirming:
"They are over the moon, and from what I hear, so in love!"

For the gala, which hosted the biggest stars in the world, the couple wore matching custom looks inspired by artist Erté and the opulence of the 1920s, featuring 255,000 individual crystals and beads and 2,000 hours of artisanal hand-sewing.
Smith shared the looks on Instagram, quoting their fiancé's caption, "This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam." Their partner also arrived wearing a square yellow diamond ring on that finger, reportedly by Cartier.
The Designer Behind the Ring
The man Smith is set to marry is Christian Cowan, 32, a fashion designer born in Spain and raised in England, who founded his eponymous label in 2017. Based in New York, his brand has become a go-to for celebrities worldwide, with appearances in publications from Vogue to The New York Times.

Cowan is also a familiar person in the entertainment world. He has worked on television, including being on the crew of "America's Next Top Model," and worked as a costume designer on the 2021 short "A Fashion Thing."
His work blends high fashion with cultural visibility, which makes him a fitting match for an artist like Smith. The two are both UK natives who built their relationship largely in New York, a city Smith has grown to call home in a deeply personal way.

Three Years in the Making
Smith and Cowan were first linked in December 2022 under notable circumstances: they attended the White House together to watch then-President Joe Biden sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law. The legislation repealed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act and secured federal recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages.

Since then, the couple has been photographed together across New York, from tattoo appointments to runway shows. They made their official red carpet debut as a couple at the 2024 Met Gala in coordinating looks, returned together in 2025, and showed up in 2026 with even more to celebrate.

In an October 2025 appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," Smith opened up about settling into New York as a newer resident. "Being in New York, I feel the most free I've ever felt," they said, a statement that can now be interpreted with much more enthusiasm.
The Long Road to This Moment
For those who have followed Smith's career closely, this engagement carries real weight. The singer has been candid over the years about the struggles that came with fame.
In 2018, Smith told The Sun that the period following their first major success was marked by excessive drinking and a loss of control. "It's about the self-destructive element," Smith said of the track "Burning" from their second album, "The Thrill of It All."

By 2020, Smith opened up further. Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music, they described panic attacks, anxiety, and depression that followed years of intense touring.
"I’ve always been sad, but for the first time I actually really had mental health issues [...]. I think it was PTSD probably from before," Smith said, adding that the silence of a dressing room after the adrenaline of performing live was "really, really tough" to sit with.

Therefore, getting to this point, publicly happy and about to be married, is no small thing. Smith, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, has built a life that reflects both creative freedom and personal honesty. And if the 2026 Met Gala is any indication, the next chapter is going to be spectacular.

And another couple was just as spectacular. Ciara and Russell Wilson just redefined goals at the gala. Still, it was a specific, daring choice in the singer's ensemble that had the entire internet locked in a heated debate.
Their appearance tied into the night’s "Fashion is Art" dress code, but these two stepped onto the red carpet with a look that felt less like a costume and more like a high-stakes masterpiece.

The Social Media Reactions Said It All
On social media, viewers had plenty to say. On Instagram, fans delivered their verdict with enthusiasm: "BEST DRESSED So Far For Me🔥" and "Yessss best dressed couple shoot best dressed of the night!"
The praise kept rolling in with comments such as "Finally someone who understood the assignment!" and simply, "🔥🔥👑ROYALTY!!!!" Over on Facebook, the reactions were equally heated, but more specific.
"It's giving queen Nefertiti vibes 😍👑" one commenter wrote under People magazine's post. "Stole 👏 the 👏 show!" wrote another. Not everyone was completely sold, though.

One commenter offered a more measured take: "I love the dress, but the metal circles and the strange feather metal crown take away from the beauty of the gown. Your eyes travel to those first and ask what's that and why instead of that gorgeous bejeweled dress."

And then there was the detail that had plenty of fans sidetracked altogether: "I love Russy with long hair and that beard!😍"
Elsewhere, on a separate Facebook reel, the split opinion continued. "The dress is pretty, but I don't think Ciara needed a headpiece. Russell looks good!" one person commented.
Another kept it short and sweet: "Love the Royal Egyption [sic] look 🙃."

The Look Everyone Couldn't Stop Talking About
So what exactly did they wear? Ciara arrived in a sheer, gold-toned floor-length gown by Celia Kritharioti, covered from neckline to hem in heavy beading, sequins, and reflective embellishments.

The dress had a fitted straight silhouette with a high neckline, and gold bands wrapped around her neck, shoulders, and upper torso in a cage-like formation. The effect was sculptural — more armor than fabric.

Completing the look was a tall, pointed black-and-gold headpiece, cat-eye sunglasses, oversized geometric earrings, gold cuffs, rings, and open-toe heels. Every single element was intentional, right down to the hair tucked beneath that commanding crown.

As it turns out, that unmistakable aura had a name — and a story behind it. Ciara confirmed what fans had already guessed — the entire look was a nod to Egyptian Queen Nefertiti.
"I would say we have Queen Egyptian regality, inspiration, and energy going on," she shared on the red carpet. "Nefertiti inspired so many artists, you know, in the industry and in general."

She added that she was "excited" to bring that energy to such a high-profile stage. The headpiece — the detail that divided fans most sharply — was no last-minute addition.
Ciara pulled back the curtain on the process behind it: "Gold foil. The process is, like, literally, like, step by step. Caesar was very intentional how he placed the bowl and a lot of spray. There's a lot that's got to be in my head."

Russell Wilson Matched His Queen in White and Gold
Russell, meanwhile, leaned into a crisp all-white formal ensemble with gold detailing throughout. His outfit featured a long white coat with gold buttons, branch-like gold embroidery on the sleeves, and fringe-style gold accents across the shoulders.

Underneath, he wore a white shirt, vest, trousers, and shoes — finished off with tinted sunglasses, layered necklaces, rings, and a wristwatch.
Wilson also spoke about attending with Ciara, saying, "I've been very fortunate. Obviously, I get to go with her, so she always makes me look better."

He also gave credit where it was due, shouting out designer Brandon Blackwood and Jan-Michael Quammie for pulling his look together for the night. The result was cohesive without being matchy-matchy, a balance that is notoriously hard for couples to pull off on fashion's biggest night.

Whether you were fully convinced by the headpiece or not, one thing was hard to argue: Ciara and Russell Wilson came dressed with a concept, a story, and a level of commitment to the theme that made most other looks feel incidental by comparison.

The 2026 Met Gala asked its guests to treat fashion as art. For one couple at least, the assignment was very much understood.
