Ben Affleck's Mother Chris Anne Passes Away — New Details Emerge About Where She Spent Her Final Hours

The mother of two Oscar winners spent her final days holding on for a family moment that meant everything to her, before dying in a place that has now been disclosed.

Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck's mother, Chris Anne Affleck, died on June 2, 2026, at age 83, her family announced on July 23. She had received a grave diagnosis months earlier, but the circumstances of her death reveal how closely her last hours remained tied to the sons and grandchildren at the center of her life.

Her Sons Are Leaning on Their Family

The loss has been deeply painful for Ben, 53, and Casey, 50, who grew up under their mother's steady influence before either became a Hollywood star. A source told People that her death is "hitting Ben and Casey really hard."

"Losing your mom is an unimaginable loss at any age, and they're grieving deeply," the insider added. Their own children have reportedly been an important source of comfort as the family stays close and supports one another.

Chris had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2025 and was told she might have only six months remaining. Yet one family occasion gave her something deeply personal to hold on for.

She Had One Final Wish

Following her diagnosis, Chris's greatest wish was to watch her grandson Atticus graduate from high school. On May 31, 2026, she attended his graduation with her family beside her.

Atticus, 18, is one of Casey's two children with his former wife, actress Summer Phoenix. Their older child, Indiana, is 22. Chris is also survived by Ben's three children with his former wife, actress Jennifer Garner: Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Sam, 12.

Her obituary described all five grandchildren as the driving force of the final two decades of her life.

A death certificate later released by several outlets revealed that Chris suffered cardiopulmonary arrest while "visiting her son's residence." The document did not specify whether she was staying with Ben or Casey.

It also identified pancreatic adenocarcinoma as a condition that contributed to her death. The disclosure means Chris spent her final hours at one of her sons' homes, shortly after gathering with the family for the graduation she had been determined to attend.

Even during her remaining months, however, Chris did not focus only on her illness. After receiving her prognosis, she contacted her friend Josh Laub and asked him to record oral histories about his years working as a principal in the South Bronx.

That request reflected the curiosity and concern for others she had carried throughout her life, including long before her sons became famous.

Her Unconventional Spirit Appeared Early

Chris was born Christopher Anne Boldt in New York City in December 1942. Her unusual first name became something she embraced rather than avoided.

Years later, when a typo left the letter "s" out of her first email address, she simply kept using "Chritopher" for roughly two decades. It was a small example of the practicality and humor that followed her through life.

Chris adored her younger siblings and admired her stepfather, Sam, whose service during World War II and support for civil rights made a lasting impression on her.

She attended the Nightingale-Bamford School, where she appreciated the education but questioned the sheltered environment around her. During one lesson, a teacher criticized her objection to Jim Crow laws by suggesting she had not heard the opposing position.

Chris responded by going to a payphone and calling Woolworth's to ask whether its stores truly refused service to Black customers. She was willing to check whether she was mistaken, yet she did not treat uncertainty as permission to remain silent.

That instinct soon moved beyond the classroom. Chris taught literacy during Freedom Summer in Mississippi, marched against the Vietnam War, and embraced the counterculture of the 1960s.

She was also among the first Radcliffe women to receive a Harvard diploma. Although her education could have led her toward more lucrative work, she chose public schools and remained a teacher for 35 years.

Her Classroom Reflected Her Principles

Chris earned both her undergraduate and master's degrees at Harvard University. She taught fifth and sixth grade, treating children from very different backgrounds as equals in her classroom.

Some of her students had recently arrived from Haiti, while others came from privileged Cambridge families. Chris expected each child to be respected as a full member of the small community she created at school.

Ben once contrasted his parents' backgrounds while discussing his upbringing. "My mother taught public school, went to Harvard and then got her master's there and taught fifth and sixth grade in a public school," he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2012.

His father, Timothy Affleck, did not attend college and worked in several jobs, including as an auto mechanic, bartender and Harvard janitor.

Chris and Timothy welcomed Benjamin Géza Affleck in 1972. Caleb Casey Affleck followed in 1975, around the time the family moved to Massachusetts, where Chris continued teaching in the Boston area.

The marriage ended when Ben was about 12, and Timothy was mostly absent from their lives. As his interest in acting became more serious during adolescence, Chris helped him find an opening into an unfamiliar business.
