Don't sleep on your right side. Sleep expert explains why
This chiropractor has offered his expert advice on how people should be sleeping for their health.
Dr John Douillard, a chiropractor and sleep expert, has shared his thoughts on how sleep positions can affect overall health and longevity.
As reported by Shared, plenty of people suffer from sleeping disorders. Unfortunately, lack of sleep doesn't only leave people tired, but can also have a number of other adverse effects on health.
These adverse effects include high blood pressure, depression, excess stress, and increased weight gain.
Studies have indicated that it is preferrable to get between 7 and 8 hours of sleep every night. But quantity is not the only important thing when it comes to sleep, according to Dr Douillard. Quality is even more important.
The good doctor states that the sleeping position can either have health benefits, or aggravate existing health issues that people suffer. He has states that sleeping on the left side is a much better option than on the right side.
“Emphasizing the left side for rest and sleep offers some time-tested wisdom for very real health and longevity benefits,” Douillard explained.
There are four main benefits that come from sleeping on the left side.
Stops snoring
When sleeping on the left side, people who generally snore will do so less. Snoring can negatively affect the way the heart functions, and sleeping on the left can even help to reduce sleep apnea.
Supports the lymphatic system
Sleeping on the left will help the body to flush out toxins, waste, and lymph fluid.
Relieves heartburn
People who suffer from heartburn and a sensitive stomach will benefit greatly from sleeping on their left side.
Improves heart health
Sleeping on the left side boosts the functioning of the heart, and even helps to prevent cardiovascular problems later on.
