Olympic skater performs 'Irish Dances' on ice, making the public jump to their feet
James Brown’s performance in the 2014 U.S. National Championship was so good that even now, four years later, people are talking about it.
Experts labeled it as ‘unique’ and added that even though figure skating is considered a sport, Brown’s choreography made room for art and expression.
One of the most impressive aspects of it was that the performance was inspired by Riverdance, the Irish touring theatrical show premiered in 1995. When Brown started his number, nobody apart from him and his choreographer knew what he would do.
The first two minutes of it didn’t have any surprises as it had classical music in the background and his movements were the ones people are used to seeing in such competitions.
After passing the two-minute mark, Irish dance music (Reeling Around the Sun) began playing and the people immediately knew that there was something special coming. Brown’s elegant and sophisticated movements changed, as well, to blend in with the music.
He started doing quick foot movements following the traditional Irish dance steps, something that the audience appreciated a lot as they couldn’t stop clapping and cheering him.
Brown, who was 19 at the time of the presentation, kept gliding across the ice using every inch of the floor to attract the attention of the audience before doing breathtaking jumps and twirls.
At the end of the presentation, the audience gave him a standing ovation that clearly touched Brown’s heart, who couldn’t believe how good everything went and how pleased everyone was.
It was later revealed that he wasn’t sure about doing that choreography when his coach suggested it for the first time. Thankfully, he listed to him and it became a career-defining success.
Nowadays, he is still skating at the highest level as he recently got the silver medal at the Skate Canada International. Brown also won the bronze medal in the Four Continents Figure Skating Championship.
