Jada Pinkett-Smith admits to having 'concerns' about her sons' dating choices
Jada Pinkett invited Duane Martin for a talk on her red table and she admitted that she sometimes is concerned about their dating choices. The two parents exchanged notes and had a good laugh.
Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith are not your everyday parents. They brought up fearless opinionated kids who are not afraid to get off the beaten path. While the couple has, for the most part, encouraged their kids to be different – and always defended them from the world – sometimes they make testy choices.
On her recent Red Table Talk, the actress invited Duane Martin and talked about raising kids. At some point, she brought up sons’ dating life. Well, she had Jaden, 19, and Trey, 25, who her husband shares with his ex-wife Sheree Fletcher. Since Jada treats them both as her sons, it was not clear which of the two she was talking about. She did say, though, that she was concerned. "There've been a few -- I've been concerned" but added that there wasn't much parents could do.
"You got to go with the flow. Your kids aren’t always going to date people that you love, but I’ve learned that you really have to just be there and support, because [if you don’t] that can create a conflict that you can’t get around.”
In the end, Martin and Jada agreed that parents needed to be more forgiving of themselves. "When you become a parent, you have these huge ideals, even for yourself, because we all are coming into parenting with our own childhood traumas. And you're hoping you can fix all that through your own rearing of your children, and you can't. Your kids are gonna have their burdens. And even though I see how it might have hurt you, it's what I knew."
They have both done a great job with their respective families. Time for a little back-pat.
