Kilmer is set to reprise his role as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky for the upcoming sequel of the 1986 Top Gun film.

On June 6, 2018, an exclusive report from The Wrap confirmed that the 58-year-old will officially take part in Top Gun 2 as Iceman.

The sequel will now focus on Tom Cruise’s character, aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, as a mentor to a new set of U.S. Navy fighter pilots.

A representative of Paramount refused to comment on Kilmer’s casting. The actor was spotted in close proximity to the San Diego hotel that the studio had been using since they started their production of the film.

In 2015, Kilmer already teased of having been cast on the movie on his official Facebook page. He revealed that he was offered a role in Top Gun: Maverick, which is the official title of the sequel.

Although, shortly afterward, Kilmer revised his post and suggested that he was wrong to make the announcement.

He wrote, ‘This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long, long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the top gun…an innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent.'

The original film featured Kilmer as Cruise’s enemy. Both their characters were competing against each other to become the country’s top Navy fighter pilot.

At the time, Top Gun grossed almost $357 million worldwide after it was released.

For the sequel, Joseph Kosinski will be directing it since the original director of Top Gun, Tony Scott, committed suicide in 2012. The script was written by Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig, and Justin Marks.

Top Gun: Maverick is set to premiere on July 12, 2019. Fans will have to see Kilmer’s performance as he had been a survivor of throat cancer resulting in a distorted voice box. For more updates on the movie, visit our Twitter account, @amomama_usa.
