'The Wire' Actor James Ransone Dead at 46

James Ransone was found dead in Los Angeles, with a few quiet details emerging from authorities, police, and a short message from his wife.

James Ransone, best known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka on HBO's "The Wire," has died. He was 46.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Ransone died on Friday, December 19, 2025, in Los Angeles. His manner of death was ruled a suicide, and his cause of death was listed as hanging. The place of death was recorded as a shed.

Medical Examiner records show Ransone's case number as 2025-19778. His body status was listed as ready for release. The case remains open, with the manner of death confirmed as suicide. The investigation was handled by investigator Gerardo Meza, with Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Richard Ou assigned to the case.

TMZ reported that the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call at a residence following Ransone's death. Officers completed a death investigation report, and no foul play was suspected, according to information obtained from law enforcement.

Following news of his death, Ransone's wife shared a tribute on Instagram on December 21. In the post, she reflected on their relationship and their children.

"I told you I have loved you 1000 times before and I know I will love you again. You told me - I need to be more like you and you need to be more like me - and you were so right. Thank you for giving me the greatest gifts - you, Jack and Violet. We are forever," she wrote.
