According to the Los Angeles Police Department, West Valley patrol officers were sent to the 19200 block of Erwin Street on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at around 9:30 a.m.
When officers arrived, they discovered Handy in the front yard of the residence. He was unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to the chest.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The disturbing details did not end there…
The Chilling Words from the Suspect That Changed Everything
As PEOPLE reported, dispatch audio captured that police responded after a person called 911. The call was described as "unknown trouble," but what the caller allegedly said to dispatchers quickly turned the situation into something much darker.
The caller allegedly told dispatchers, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin." That one sentence now sits at the center of a case that has stunned many who knew James Handy from his long career on-screen.
The streets near Handy's home were reportedly blocked off by law enforcement as the investigation unfolded. According to the dispatch audio cited by PEOPLE, authorities were also advised to begin door-to-door inquiries in the area and "advise who opens and who doesn't."
For a moment, the scene around the home seemed to raise the possibility of a broader threat. But detectives later said they believe the incident was isolated and that there appeared to be no danger to the public at the time.
Then came another startling detail. According to LAPD, the suspect allegedly flagged down nearby responding officers and told them he was the person they were looking for.
Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, a resident of Tarzana. LAPD said Gledhill lived at the location with his mother, who was Handy's girlfriend. That relationship detail adds another emotional layer to an already tragic case.
Gledhill was arrested and transported to Van Nuys Jail. He was booked on one count of murder under 187(a) PC. His bail was set at $2 million, according to the LAPD.
The case is being investigated by the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division, Valley Bureau Section. Authorities are asking anyone with more information to contact Robbery-Homicide Division, Valley Section, Detective Simonyan or Detective Lopez, at (818) 374-9550.
During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be directed to (310) 726-7700 or 1-877-LAPD-24-7. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or through the P3 Tips mobile application.
For now, the investigation has left behind a troubling sequence of details: a chilling 911 call, a "Top Gun" actor found wounded in his own front yard, and a suspect who police say pointed them straight to himself. More details on the story will follow shortly; stay tuned!
