18-Year-Old's Final Hours After Prom Night Reveal Heartbreaking Details
What began as a proud family celebration quickly turned into a timeline of haunting final moments — a fresh haircut, a polished prom look, smiling photos, and a mother's posts that now read like pieces of a goodbye no one saw coming.
What should have been one of the happiest nights of 18-year-old Ladainian Cathey's young life ended in a tragedy no family should ever have to face.
Just hours after prom memories were made, police say officers were called to an incident at 1:41 a.m., and the details only get more heartbreaking from there.

A Joyful Prom Celebration Turned Into a Devastating Timeline
Behind the police report of what happened is a much softer, sadder story, one filled with prom photos, a proud mom, and a young man who was looking forward to a major milestone.
In one Facebook post shared, Cathey's mother, Lakeisha Johnson, proudly showed off her son's prom photos and wrote, "Now that im sitting down let me drop my baby pic 2k26 [sic]." The images show him dressed sharply for prom, smiling and posing during a night that should have stayed joyful.

The photos are especially painful now because they capture what appeared to be the glow of a teenager stepping into a special chapter: A suit, balloons, smiles, and family pride — all frozen just before everything changed.

According to the Memphis Police Department, officers responded to a shooting in the 4600 block of Elvis Presley Boulevard on April 19, 2026, at 1:41 a.m. An 18-year-old male victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said preliminary information indicated that two suspects fled the scene in a black Mercedes GLK. The next day, April 20, MPD's Mt. Moriah Station Task Force located the suspect vehicle in the area of North Germantown Parkway and Walnut Grove Road.
The vehicle was later seen at a business in the 8100 block of Walnut Grove Road, where officers made contact with the driver, a 17-year-old male, who police said was the sole occupant. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with First-Degree Murder in the Perpetration of a Robbery, police said.
Authorities noted that the investigation remains ongoing.
The Teen's Barber Remembers His Final Smile
The heartbreak deepened as more details emerged about the hours before Cathey's death. As reported by Action News 5, Jaylon Dodson, a barber, reflected on the last time he saw his friend Cathey before the shooting. Dodson said Cathey was graduating from Southaven High School.

"You never know when it's someone's last day, so... I ain't know, he ain't know. He walked out smiling, ready to get in his Benz and have a good day," Dodson said. That detail is the kind that stays with people: Cathey did not leave the barbershop scared, worried, or expecting danger — he left smiling.
Dodson said Cathey had scheduled a haircut the day before prom night. Like so many teenagers getting ready for a big moment, he came in excited about how he was going to look.
"He came in, smiling, ready for prom, seeing his prom fit before everybody. I was like, 'Yeah, you finna come trim, [sic]'" Dodson said.
Mere hours later, the teen was shot and killed in Whitehaven, off Elvis Presley Boulevard and Shelby Drive. "I ain't gone lie, it just happened, so it's like it still don't feel real [sic]," Dodson said. That feeling — disbelief mixed with grief — soon spread across Cathey's family and community.
Community Activist Terry Holloway, who has worked for years to raise awareness about protecting youth and adults through an organization called HUGS, which stands for Helping Unite Gangs Seriously, also spoke out.

"I don't condone in [sic] the violence, man, cause it's us killing us. I always speak about how hating ain't healthy and killing your own ain't gangsta," Holloway said, adding that no family should have to lose a child to gun violence.
"It's hurting... the mothers who got sons that fear that this what's going to happen to their sons [sic]," Holloway also reflected.

Lakeisha Johnson's Heartbreaking Message to Her Son
For Johnson, that fear became painfully real. On April 19, 2026, after the heartbreaking news, Johnson shared a short but crushing Facebook status dedicated to her son. "Just know mommy love u son [sic]😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭," she wrote in the post.
The post drew more than 4,000 reactions and over 800 comments, as people flooded her page with condolences. It was only a few words, but they carried the unbearable weight of a mother's loss.

A Mother's Proud Posts Become Painful Memories
Johnson later shared more memories of her son, and each post revealed another layer of the bond she had with him. In one emotional post, she wrote, "Yall really had to take my baby away from me for what y did yall do this Im lost im hurt 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 [sic]."
The photos attached to the post show personal snapshots — moments that now read like pieces of a life his loved ones are desperately trying to hold onto. It is the kind of post no parent ever imagines writing.
In another post, Johnson described how much her children mean to her and how shattered she feels after losing her son.
"My kids are my world if anyone no me knows that My son had a great life that my best friend my heart is shattered In to pieces I'm trying so hard be strong but how that was my baby now all I got is memories this can't be real 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 [sic]," she expressed in the Facebook tribute.
Her words were raw, direct, and devastating. One day, she was celebrating prom photos, and soon after, she wrote that all she has left now are memories.
Johnson also shared another set of memories and wrote about how her son and daughter had been so happy just the day before the tragedy, and how strong Cathey's sister is being amid the grief.
Cathey's mother's Facebook posts show that she is not only mourning a son, but also a best friend, a child she planned her life around, and a piece of her family's heart.
And perhaps that is the most heartbreaking detail of all: Before the tragedy, Cathey was simply doing what so many teens do before prom — getting a haircut, putting on a sharp outfit, posing for pictures, and enjoying his moment.
He walked out smiling, ready for a good day… Hours later, his family was left trying to understand how that smile became a memory.
At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Johnson, Cathey's sister, their entire family, the teen's friends, community, loved ones, and all who knew and loved him as they mourn such a significant loss. We hope for their healing amid their time of grief. RIP, dear Cathey.
