Texas Restaurant Owner's Family Tragedy Leaves the Public in Shock
The last video on Thy Mitchell's Instagram looked like the kind of memory a family would treasure forever. Only days later, that same post would become the detail that made an already devastating story feel even harder to bear…
A glamorous Houston restaurant family appeared to have built a life filled with love, success, and sweet family moments…until a welfare check led police to a horrifying discovery inside their River Oaks home. And as the tragedy unfolded, one final social media post made the story even more heartbreaking.
River Oaks Welfare Check Led to a Horrifying Discovery
Matthew and Thy Mitchell were known in Houston's restaurant world as the couple behind Traveler's Table, a popular restaurant with a worldly spirit and a warm public image.
They were also parents to two young children, Maya and Max, and, according to reports, Thy was pregnant at the time of her death.

According to the Daily Mail, Matthew, 52, has been named as the suspect in the deaths of his pregnant wife, Thy, 39, and their two children, ages eight and four. All four were found dead in the family's $1.2 million home in the affluent River Oaks neighborhood of Houston, Texas, on Monday night, May 4, 2026.
Authorities said all victims died from gunshot wounds, and the tragedy is being treated as a murder-suicide. The Houston Police Department stated officers were called to the address shortly after 5:26 p.m. on Monday for a welfare check. Police said a babysitter and a relative of one of the parents alerted officers after they had not heard from the family for more than a day.
When police entered the home, they found Matthew, Thy, and their two children dead inside. The children had reportedly last been seen on Sunday and were found dead in their beds, according to Fox26.
Authorities have not released further details about the crime scene. Still, the details that have emerged have been enough to leave the public deeply shaken.
The River Oaks community is among the most affluent in Houston, with multimillion-dollar homes lining its quiet streets. A neighbor named Cindy, who said she has lived in the neighborhood for 19 years, told Click2 that she had "never seen anything like this."

"We haven't had these kinds of tragedies. We don't have robberies," she continued. "I shake for the little kids."
Matthew and Thy Mitchell's Celebrated Restaurant Legacy
Before the tragedy, Matthew had a long and varied professional background. According to his biography on the restaurant's website, he studied in France, Italy, and at Oxford University in England.
Early in his career, Matthew worked as a journalist in London and New York City. After returning to Texas, he attended Rice University and later entered the pharmaceutical industry.
He eventually became the President and CEO of the Texas Center for Drug Development, Inc., which is a clinical research company. Later, he opened Traveler's Table with Thy.
Thy was a restaurateur and a board member of the Texas Restaurant Association, and in September 2025, she and Matthew were named Restaurateurs of the Year in Houston.
That recognition now feels painfully bittersweet. The couple's public success has become part of what makes the tragedy so shocking to many who followed their story from the outside.
A publicist for the family's restaurant referred to Thy as a "dear friend" to the Daily Mail. They also said the family would not be releasing a statement while the investigation continues.
Flowers Appear Outside the Mitchell Family Home
As the news spreads, grief has begun showing up outside the Mitchell family home. In a Facebook post, Grizzly's Hood News shared a photo of flowers, orchids, and memorial items placed near the property.
"Friends, loved ones and colleagues have been stopping by Matthew and Thy Mitchell's River Oaks home, placing flowers outside and paying their respects following the tragic loss," the post's caption reads.
The memorial is a quiet but powerful image. Bouquets line the ground, and photos appear to have been placed at the scene as loved ones and community members try to process the unthinkable.
Thy Mitchell's Sister Ly Mai Shares the Family's Grief
Thy's sister, Ly Mai, also shared a heartbreaking Facebook post confirming the family's grief. "We are heartbroken to share that my sister, Thy, and her beloved children, Maya and Max, passed away last night," she wrote.
"Our family is grieving deeply and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be shared when they are available," she added.

Friends Remember Thy as a 'Supporter' and 'Pure Light'
Another emotional tribute came from Trang Le. "This is so unbearable!! Not looking for any explanation nor justification, just pls send your prayers for their family!!!" Trang wrote.
She remembered Thy as both a friend and supporter in the restaurant community. "Thy, you supported me as a friend & my business as a fellow restaurateur from Day 1 ... You will always be in my heart!"

Trang also wrote directly about Matthew, saying, "Matt, I can't imagine what you have gone through in your head, [sic] it must be too much to think straight." She ended her tribute with, "May you all rest in peace!! 🙏."
Adrianna Rubio-Clasen also posted a dedication, penning, "Tragic….just tragic. She was pure light." Adrianna described Thy as a "soft spoken [sic] beautiful girl who had a dream." She said the photo she shared shows Thy after she had won an award for being one of the best restaurateurs in Houston.
"Traveler's Table served international foods for those who missed home," Adrianna wrote. "May her legacy live on forever. Houston is mourning and may she and her babies rest in peace❤️🙏." She then added, referring to Matthew, "As for him, I have no words."
Thy Mitchell's Final Instagram Vlog
But amid the tributes and shock, another detail makes the tragedy feel even more devastating: Thy's final Instagram post. Mere days before the deaths, Thy shared a cheerful Instagram vlog showing a sweet mother-daughter day with Maya. The outing was centered on dress shopping for Thy's sister’s wedding in Boston later in the year.

The video begins with a still of what appears to be her sister's hand showing an engagement ring, while a man stands in the background. Text on the screen explains the happy reason behind the outing: "Vy is getting married!"
Thy and her daughter are then seen walking down the stairs together as they leave their house, and Thy drives them to the dress shop, where little Maya starts trying on dresses.

In the room, Maya appears in a soft, formal dress while mirrors surround her. It is a simple, joyful scene — the kind of family moment that would normally feel light and lovely.

The video later cuts to the mother and daughter having lunch together. In one especially tender moment, Maya playfully feeds her mom a bite of her cookie.

The duo is then seen back at the dress shop, where Maya watches Thy try on dresses. The little girl gives her opinion on one dress and rates it a "10/10" before a shop attendant comes to check on them.
Thy's caption made the video even more poignant after the tragedy. She wrote: "Vlog: an afternoon dress shopping for my sister's wedding in Boston later this year 💐. Maya picked her dress and made sure I was set too (10/10 😂) @davidsbridal @shopdavidpeck. Light lunch stop at @craftpita always hits the spot. The sweetest mom-daughter time 🤍."

Online Comments Capture Grief, Anger, and Disbelief Surrounding the Tragedy
After news of the deaths surfaced, the comment section of Thy's final post filled with grief, disbelief, and anger. One person penned, "I'm in shock...😢." Another commenter echoed, "I'm in shock. Thy was the sweetest person."
Someone else commented, "How could your husband be so cruel to kill his wife and children 😢," while a fellow netizen asked, "why [sic] would he do that to his family??"
Another person expressed, "she sounds like such a sweet woman, based on everyone's comments who knew her. may he rot in hell. keep weak men away from weapons [sic]."
The comments capture what many people seem to be feeling: Grief for Thy and the children, horror over the reported circumstances, and confusion over how such a tragedy could happen inside a family that had appeared so full of life and love.
What makes the story especially haunting is the contrast between Thy's final public post and the police account that followed days later. In one moment, a mother and daughter were laughing, shopping, eating lunch, and preparing for a family wedding… Then, days later, loved ones were leaving flowers outside the family's home.
At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Thy's sister, their entire family, friends, loved ones, community, and all who knew and loved her, as well as her and Matthew's kids, as they mourn such significant losses. We hope for their healing amid their time of grief. RIP, dear Thy, Max, Maya, and Matthew.
