A Night That Was Humbling and Surprising

John arrived at Cannes on May 15, 2026, in true leading-man fashion: he piloted the plane himself. After touching down, he posted a clip on Instagram of himself making the in-flight announcement to passengers, adding that champagne was "on me."

It set a festive tone for what would become one of the more memorable nights of his career. That evening, he walked the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals for the "Karma" screening in a sharp black blazer and matching vest over a white button-down and tie, finished with an off-white beret and round glasses.

The actor wore the same clothes for the reason he was actually at the festival: the world premiere of his directorial debut, which had its own red carpet event that same day. His daughter, Ella, 26, who stars in the film, accompanied him and looked striking in a black sleeveless gown, stilettos, diamond earrings, and her hair swept into an Old Hollywood bouffant with a center part.

But something no one was expecting took place that night.

Festival head Thierry Frémaux stopped the evening at the Debussy Theater to present John with an honorary Palme d'Or, calling him "one of the greatest actors" deserving of the honor.

John's reaction was reportedly immediate and genuine: he got visibly teary-eyed. "I can't believe this. This is the last thing I expected," he said onstage. "You said this would be a special night, but I didn't think you meant this. This is a humbling moment. This is beyond the Oscar."

He also reflected on the road that brought him to Cannes in the first place, sharing that the film's acceptance into the festival had already broken him down once before.

"When I met with [Frémaux] in November, I had no expectation that my film would be accepted, and when Thierry said it was... making history because it would be the first film being accepted that early, I cried like a baby," John added while accepting the award.

The Film Behind the Emotion

John adapted "Propeller One-Way Night Coach" from his own 1997 children's book. The story follows Jeff, an eight-year-old aviation enthusiast, who embarks on a cross-country flight to Hollywood with his mother. The actor originally wrote the tale for his late son, Jett Travolta.

During the event, John emphasized that the project represented far more for him than just a typical movie. The story serves as the fundamental roadmap of his life, and the actor added that the presence of his family and supporters in the audience justified both the existence of the film and his own purpose as an artist.

The movie stars Ella alongside Clark Shotwell, Kelly Eviston-Quinnett, and Olga Hoffmann. Audiences can stream the film on Apple TV+ starting May 29.

Beret, Boots, and a Very Different Look

The following day, on May 16, John Travolta was back at the Palais des Festivals for the official photocall of his movie, and he leaned fully into his new signature accessory.

The actor wore a completely black outfit, pairing a velvet button-down shirt with slim-fit pants and boots. He topped off the style with another beret, wire-rimmed glasses, and dyed facial hair.

He posed happily for photographers with his hands extended, and Ella was once again at his side, stunning in a white, calf-length dress with black details. Both looked amazing once again, and the photos from both days set off a loud conversation online for several reasons.

Fans Zero In on One Detail

John looked notably different to many who have followed his career for decades, and the comments made that very clear. On Instagram, one person wrote, "I didn't recognise him," while another went further, "Looks like John just has a brand new face."

Over on Reddit, another netizen added, "Lol.. oh yeah he's had a TON of plastic surgery. His face has looked different every year for decades now [sic]."

But the observation that kept resurfacing across platforms was more specific. Fans couldn't stop comparing his face to his hands. One commenter noted, "Wild how his face looks 40 years younger than his hands," and another put it plainly, "Face age doesn't match hands age [sic]."

John has not addressed the comments. But with the photos now circulating widely, the contrast people keep pointing to is there for anyone to see:
