Laura Dern Steps Out With Her Legendary Father and Grown-Up Son – Fans Say He Looks Just Like Grandpa
When a photo of three generations of one Hollywood family landed online from Cannes this week, people paused. It wasn't the tuxedo or the silver gown that caught their attention.
Laura Dern, 59, brought her father Bruce Dern, 89, and her son Ellery Walker Harper, 24, to the Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2026, for the world premiere of "Dernsie," a documentary about Bruce's career in Hollywood.

The three generations posed together on the Palais des Festivals steps, and the images traveled far beyond the usual film festival audience.
Fans were struck by how much time had passed since Ellery was small, and many said Laura's son looked remarkably like his grandfather.

Three Generations on the Palais des Festivals Steps
Laura arrived in a shimmery mesh silver gown, while Bruce paired a classic tuxedo with his Los Angeles Dodgers baseball cap. He stood between Laura and Ellery on the red carpet, holding them both close, with daughter Jaya Harper completing the family portrait on the far side.
Ellery stood to Bruce's right. The Cannes premiere marked the first time Laura and Bruce had appeared publicly together since the passing of Diane Ladd, Bruce's former wife and Laura's mother, in November 2025.

Despite their divorce in 1969, the two had remained friends throughout the years, and all three had been honored with adjoining stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010.
"Dernsie," directed by Mike Mendez, follows Bruce through his more than 65-year career in his own words, with contributions from Laura, Quentin Tarantino, and Alexander Payne.

The title nods to Bruce’s long-noted habit of improvising dialogue on set, something directors have long noted.
'Did Not Recognize Him at First'
When the photos of the trio's appearance at Cannes spread online, fans who had followed Bruce's career from the 1960s onwards were quietly moved by seeing him at 89.

His career spans more than six decades, from westerns in the early 1970s to three Quentin Tarantino films, and for those who first encountered him at the height of his powers, the Cannes photos landed with feeling.
"Wow....did not recognize him at first," wrote one commenter. Another added, "So strange seeing Bruce Dern like this, but he is 89." A third, apparently unaware of the family connection, wrote simply:
"Awwww I didn't know they were father and daughter."

But the response to Ellery drew the greatest warmth. Standing tall beside his mother and grandfather on the red carpet, he drew immediate comparisons to Bruce.
"Handsome lad looks like grandpa!" one fan wrote. "He looks just like his grandfather, wow!" said another. A third added, "Can't believe how grown up he is! I remember him as a toddler."
The Boy Who Became His Own Person
Laura has long spoken warmly and publicly about watching her children grow into adults.
When Ellery turned 21 in 2022, she celebrated the milestone with an emotional Instagram tribute, calling him the "greatest gift" she could have imagined and praising his empathy, artistry, humor, and kindness.
Now in his mid-20s, the son of musician Ben Harper has increasingly stepped into a public life of his own. He has walked the runway for Calvin Klein, and at Cannes this week, he stood noticeably taller than his mother, a detail not lost on fans who have watched him grow up alongside Laura's career.
Laura has also spoken openly about the fear she experienced following complications after Ellery's birth. In a 2017 interview, she recalled the terror surrounding a life-threatening surgery her son underwent as a newborn, remembering long hours spent in hospital rooms thinking about the families around her.

A Family Built on Love Long After Change
The three-generation moment at Cannes also reflected Laura’s long-held belief that families can remain deeply connected even after relationships change.
Over the years, she has spoken openly about growing up with divorced parents who stayed close and about raising children born from a marriage that ended, experiences she says reshaped her understanding of what a loving family can look like.

When she accepted the Oscar for best supporting actress in 2020 for "Marriage Story," she addressed Bruce and Diane directly from the stage. "Some say, 'Never meet your heroes,'" she said:
"But I say, if you're really blessed, you get them as your parents. I share this with my acting heroes, my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern."
