20 Stars Who Gathered to Say Goodbye to Clive Davis — Including Barry Manilow and a Surprise Face in the Crowd — Photos
Clive Davis' funeral drew the kind of crowd only a legend like him could pull together — but it's one specific photo from inside Central Synagogue that's now got fans buzzing for an entirely different reason.
The music industry lost one of its giants on June 22, 2026, when Clive Davis died at his Manhattan home at age 94. On June 29, the man known as "The Man with the Golden Ears" was honored at a private funeral following a service at Central Synagogue in Manhattan, the synagogue he'd attended for much of his life.

The guest list read like a who's-who of music royalty, spanning every era Davis helped shape. But amid the tears and tributes, two attendees in particular caught the internet's eye for reasons that had nothing to do with grief.

But it was two specific photos that had social media talking the most.
The Photo of Barry Manilow That Stopped Fans in Their Tracks
When Manilow arrived outside the synagogue, cameras caught him in a sharp dark suit, and within hours, comment sections were flooded with reactions to his appearance.

"Manilow ... Best Dressed," one fan wrote. Another replied, "Always!!! Although I imagined it from black it's fabulous anyway."
Not everyone agreed. "Barry Manilow looks like a robot look at the hands strange!" one commenter wrote, while another asked, "People don't use black anymore?"
On a separate post, fans were more openly relieved to see him out. "Glad to see Barry out and about," one commented. Another added, "Keep getting stronger Barry!" and a third chimed in, "You Mr. Manilow look great!"

On one Instagram post, one commenter seemed to do a double take entirely. "That doesn't even look like Barry Manilow....and I don't think Clive was that nice.... Love Whitney Houston forever ❤️❤️" they wrote. Another simply added, "Best dressed Barry Manilow😂."
Barry Manilow's Appearance Carried Extra Meaning
That relief makes sense once you think about what Manilow has been through over the past six months. In December 2025, Manilow revealed he'd been diagnosed with a stage-one cancerous tumor in his left lung.
The discovery came almost by accident — after battling bronchitis for weeks, doctors ordered an MRI just to be safe, and that scan caught the tumor early.
"It's pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early," Manilow shared in a statement at the time. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor and described his recovery in characteristically upbeat terms: "No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns."
Manilow has since confirmed he is cancer-free, which makes Monday's funeral appearance carry extra weight. Standing in that synagogue, paying tribute to the man who helped build his career, was also a quiet milestone in his own recovery.
A Surprise Face in the Crowd
Manilow wasn't the only attendee whose photos sparked a stir. Former "Today" co-anchor Hoda Kotb also turned heads when photos of her at the service began circulating.

Although best known for her television career, Kotb has long been connected to many of the artists and entertainment figures whose lives intersected with Davis throughout the decades.
Her appearance alongside music royalty quickly became one of the more talked-about photo galleries from the memorial, with many social media users focusing on the expressions captured in the arrival photos.

"What is Hoda doing there?" one commenter asked. Another wondered, "Why is Hoda smiling at a funeral?" A third commenter was even more pointed, writing, "Why is Hoda smiling? Distasteful."
The reactions continued, with one user commenting, "Hoda is like 'look at me' 😂." Another simply asked, "Why is Hoda smiling?!?"

Remembering Clive Davis' Remarkable Legacy
Davis' health had been a concern in recent weeks. He was hospitalized in New York City on May 29 for an upper respiratory issue and was discharged on June 4, with a representative telling Rolling Stone he was "in good spirits and happy to be recuperating at home."

It wasn't his first health scare; in 2021, his famed Pre-Grammy Gala was postponed after he was diagnosed with Bell's palsy. Davis became president of Columbia Records in 1967 at just 35 years old, and from there built a reputation as the man with "golden ears," shaping hit after hit across five decades.
Throughout his career, he remained focused on discovering new talent while helping shape some of the most celebrated artists in modern music.

In a 2017 interview about his documentary, "The Soundtrack of Our Lives," he reflected on his enduring passion for the industry. "I'm immersed in it," he said. "I think music is the universal language."
He also spoke about wanting to keep discovering new talent, saying the industry needed to focus not just on finding the next Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen, but the next Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston — without letting that search overshadow fresh new voices.

Just months before his death, Clive Davis hosted his annual Pre-Grammy Gala in Beverly Hills, a tradition he began in 1975. The exclusive event has long brought together the biggest names in music on the eve of the Grammy Awards. | Source: Getty Images
Monday's funeral was a fitting final tribute — a room full of the very voices he spent his life discovering, gathered one last time to say goodbye.
