A deeply emotional farewell unfolded in Donegal as the Irish musician was honoured by family, music, and tradition — but moments from the service sparked both heartfelt tributes and unexpected online debate.

In a small church tucked into the Irish-speaking heart of Gweedore, County Donegal, a community fell quiet on 17 April 2026 as a nation prepared to say a final farewell.

Moya Brennan, the harpist, singer, and songwriter widely honoured as the "First Lady of Celtic music," was laid to rest at St Patrick's Church in Meenaweal, Crolly, following her peaceful passing earlier that week.

She was 73 years old and had spent more than five decades as the voice and creative force behind the Grammy Award-winning Celtic fusion group Clannad.

Ireland's President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin were both represented at the service, a mark of the esteem in which Brennan was held at the highest levels of Irish public life. Attendees also included The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr, Andrea Corr, Daniel O'Donnell and his wife, and Bono.

Parish priest Brian O Fearraig led the service and spoke of the moment news of Brennan's passing spread through Gweedore.

Outside the church, local primary school pupils joined a musical marching band and community centre staff to form a guard of honour as the congregation gathered.

As the coffin entered the church, the piece that played was "Peacemakers" — a song Brennan had recorded featuring the voice of her son, Paul, when he was just four years old.

Brought to the altar were objects chosen to represent the arc of her life — her harp, a lanyard from the last performance she ever gave, and a Donegal GAA jersey.

Parish priest Brian O Fearraig led the service and spoke of the moment news of Brennan's passing spread through Gweedore. On the Monday evening she left, he told those gathered, it had felt as though a "sacred silence descended for a while."

He added that her "beautiful harp stood silently in the corner of her room, as though keeping its own quiet vigil of respect and honour." O Fearraig then described the days that followed as unexpectedly tender, saying:

"[Her home] became again a place of friendship and love, of kindness and light, a centre of song and deep spirituality, where tears of sadness and tears of joy mingled with memories so lovingly shared by young and old alike."

Conducting his tribute in both Irish and English, the priest described Brennan as "above all, a woman of music and melody, a woman of motherhood, and mission."

He added that she had known her gift was from God, using it "faithfully and well, allowing her voice and harp to harmonise and become instruments of beauty, peace, and blessing for the world."

"It has been said that, through her voice and her gifted playing of the harp, Máire carried the rugged beauty, that quiet strength, the ancient timeless mystery, and rich soul of Donegal to audiences right across the world," he continued.

The priest also shared the words of fellow musician and close friend Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, which perhaps offered the most powerful note of the whole service: "She may be gone, but the voice will remain."

In his final words to the congregation, O Fearraig offered the image that best captured what those present had witnessed together:

"In these past few days, grace and grief, stood side by side, embraced and danced to the beautiful music, as memories were shared through tears of sadness and sorrow and tears of joy and gratitude."

The outpouring of emotion extended far beyond the church walls. Fans across the world turned to social media to share their grief in the hours that followed. "The poor family 😢 Rest in peace Moya 🙏🏻," wrote one commenter.

"Her siblings holding each other up. So so sad. God rest beautiful Moya 🙏🏻❤️," another shared. "I always wanted to see them together, but not in this situation. Moya was a wonderful artist and human 😢😢😢," a third added.

Not all online reaction focused solely on sorrow. Among photographs shared from the service, several observers turned their attention to the appearance of one prominent attendee.

"Bono dressed like he's popped out to the corner shop for a pack of smokes, rather than showing respect at a funeral," one commenter wrote.
