'Godzilla vs. Kong' Actress Kaylee Hottle Dies at 19 in Maryland Car Crash — Details Emerge About Who Was With Her

The young actress was far from home when an early-morning drive ended in a roadside ditch, leaving first responders urgently trying to identify her family while also caring for the people beside her.

Kaylee Hottle, known for playing Jia in the 2021 movie "Godzilla vs. Kong," died on July 21, 2026, after the car she was riding in crashed in Maryland.

The 19-year-old had been away for a few days, but the full account of who else was in the vehicle, how they were affected, and why reaching Kaylee's parents became another challenge would emerge later.

An Early-Morning Drive Ended off the Road

The single-vehicle collision happened at approximately 2:52 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21. According to authorities, deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office joined fire and rescue crews at the scene.

Kaylee was traveling in a 1995 Honda Accord with two other people when the driver left the Maryland roadway and struck a ditch. Investigators believe excessive speed may have contributed to the crash, though officials have not reached a final conclusion about its cause.

The response quickly became more complicated because Kaylee was unconscious and unable to tell rescuers anything herself. Meanwhile, dispatch communications offered the first clearer picture of why she had been in the vehicle and who was traveling with her.

Her Friend Had Been Behind the Wheel

Kaylee was not driving the Honda. The person behind the wheel was a 19-year-old friend whom she had traveled to visit for the weekend.

The driver remained conscious and alert after the collision. They reported pain in their right leg and ribs, but authorities said the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

A third person had also been riding in the car. That passenger declined medical treatment at the crash site, meaning Kaylee was the only person who died following the collision.

Those differences in their conditions became painfully clear as emergency workers focused on Kaylee. She needed immediate transportation to a hospital, but responders also faced a communication concern that was specific to the young actress.

Dispatchers Sought Someone Who Knew Sign Language

Kaylee was deaf, and dispatch audio reportedly captured responders asking for someone familiar with American Sign Language to come to the scene.

Although she was unconscious, the request showed that emergency personnel had learned she was deaf and were preparing for the possibility that they might need to communicate with her directly.

The audio initially described Kaylee as an 18-year-old actress, although she was 19 when she died, as she was born in May 2007. Dispatchers ordered both an ambulance and an emergency aircraft as the effort to save her intensified.

The aircraft landed on a baseball field near the crash location. At the same time, responders were trying to reach Kaylee's family, but the circumstances of her visit left them without an obvious way to do so.

Responders Did Not Know How to Reach Her Parents

Kaylee had come to Maryland to spend the weekend with her friend, according to information relayed through dispatch. The people at the scene did not know how to contact her parents, creating another urgent problem while she remained unresponsive.

That detail makes the early hours especially difficult to imagine. Kaylee's loved ones were not beside her, and responders were piecing together who she was while arranging the emergency care she needed.

She was rushed to a trauma center, but she could not be saved and was pronounced dead there. According to TMZ, Kaylee's father, Joshua Hottle, later said officials told him that his daughter's heart stopped while she was being transported to the hospital. But he has shared a lot more on his own social media.

As previously reported, Joshua talked on Facebook about the profound grief his family now faces. Despite the heartbreak, he reflected with warmth on the time they shared. "Very grateful for the 18 years we had together — and wish we had more," he said in American Sign Language (ASL).

Even as he mourned the loss of his daughter, Joshua explained he wanted the young man driving the vehicle to know he did not hold bitterness toward him. "I have forgiven you," he said. "Don't let this incident ruin the rest of your life."

Now, Kaylee's mother has also spoken out. In another Facebook video lasting more than three minutes, Ketsi Hottle appeared emotional throughout the message, pausing at times before continuing.

She captioned her post, "Privilege to be your mom, Kaylee Hottle. ❤️" According to ABC's interpretation of the video, Ketsi also said, "I still feel Kaylee is with us."

One of the memories she recalled most vividly was traveling with Kaylee to Gallaudet University. During the trip, the two talked about God, family, friends, and Kaylee's goals for the future. Mali wrote that Kaylee was easy to talk to and that those conversations became lasting memories.

Back at school, Kaylee often spent lunch periods and study halls preparing for Debate Bowl. According to Mali, they spent hours practicing arguments, discussing ideas, and sometimes talking about life beyond the classroom. She said Kaylee worked hard and was always looking for ways to improve.

Mali also wrote that she had been looking forward to teaching Kaylee again in Honors English during her senior year.

She ended her tribute by writing, "I feel so lucky that I got to be part of her journey. Rest easy, Kaylee. You’ll always have a special place in my heart." And she had also gained the affection of many others, partly through a famous franchise.
