She has always known how to make an entrance. But when Demi Moore stepped onto the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes on Thursday evening, May 21, something was deliciously, undeniably different — and the internet has not stopped talking about it since.

The 63-year-old actress arrived at the premiere of "La Bola Negra" during the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival looking every inch the Hollywood icon she is. But it was not just the gown that had photographers scrambling. Moore debuted a completely new hairstyle — and fans have a lot of feelings about it.

The Look, Head to Toe

Let's start at the top. Gone were Moore's signature long, flowing dark locks. In their place: a glamorous, shoulder-grazing lob styled into voluminous dark brunette curls parted to the side, a look her hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos has dubbed the "De-Marilyn Bob."

The soft, bouncy curls barely kissed her shoulders, giving the overall look an old Hollywood quality that felt both nostalgic and fresh.

At her collarbone sat one of the most show-stopping pieces of jewelry on the Croisette: an elaborate, starburst diamond necklace that fanned across her décolletage like cascading fireworks, its intricate diamond-encrusted tendrils catching every flash of the cameras around her.

A matching starburst cocktail ring adorned her finger, completing the jewelry story with cohesive dazzle.

The gown itself was nothing short of architectural. Moore wore a custom floor-length sapphire blue strapless dress by Self-Portrait, designed by the brand's founder and creative director Han Chong and crafted at the British fashion house's London atelier.

The structured bodice gave way to a dramatically draped, oversized puff of fabric at the hip — voluminous, sculptural folds of silk that billowed outward before releasing into a slim column skirt and a sweeping train that extended behind her across the red carpet.

The bold cobalt blue popped magnificently against the festival's iconic crimson carpet, creating a contrast that was practically made for photography.

She completed the ensemble with classic black slingback kitten heels and carried a pair of sleek black sunglasses in her bejewelled hand — effortlessly chic, all the way down.

Fans React

The look ignited fierce debate online almost immediately, with admirers and critics alike making their feelings known.

"I love the shorter hair," one fan declared simply and approvingly. "Her hair looks great like that. She looks so classy," another gushed.

But not everyone was convinced. "Say it with me, it is a wig," one sceptic announced flatly. "That hairstyle just aged her about 10-15 yrs!" another critic insisted sharply.

"Bad color and hair size she became her real age," a third charged bluntly.

Some reactions veered away from the hair entirely. "Love her haircut. Disturbed by her skeletal frame," one viewer admitted, their admiration laced with concern.

Others were more pointed. "Demi Moore or Demi Less? I feel like every time I see a photo of her, she gets smaller and smaller," one commenter observed pointedly. "Those cheek bones really are scary what is going on?" another asked, clearly troubled.

A Hair Evolution Months in the Making

The Cannes lob is actually Moore's second dramatic hair reinvention of 2026. Earlier this year, she turned heads at Gucci's FW26 Fashion Show at Palazzo Delle Scintille in Milan on February 26, trading her signature long dark hair for a sleek, above-the-shoulder wet-look bob.

Giannetos, who crafted both looks, cheekily christened the Milan style the "Demi-tris BoB" in an Instagram post that sent fans into a frenzy. At the time, the hairstylist explained the thinking behind the dramatic cut.

"I wanted to give Demi a very bold and fashion forward look for Demna's show," he said. "I felt an amazing, short, above the shoulder bob with this very sleek wet texture would be perfect to complement her look. It's a big change for Demi — we've never seen her like this before! She looks very cool, effortless and modern. And it highlights her personality."

For Cannes, Giannetos softened and lengthened that same spirit into the voluminous "De-Marilyn Bob" — darker, bouncier, and undeniably more red-carpet ready. Two reinventions. One very deliberate evolution.

Demi on Ageing — On Her Own Terms

If the commentary about her appearance bothers Moore, she has given every indication that she has long made peace with ageing on her own terms.

As a Lancôme ambassador and one of Hollywood's most enduring figures, she has been thoughtful and vocal about reframing what growing older means.

"Why not embrace ageing for what it is? It's a gift, it is a privilege," she has said.

For Moore, the philosophy runs deep. "It's not about what we're losing, but what we're gaining," she explained in a conversation with Harper's Bazaar Australia. "Ageing is thought of as a decline. But that is just not the truth."

Her outlook is one of expansive optimism rather than resistance. "Longevity opens up the possibilities; it's seeing age with optimism," she reflected.

And when it comes to the broader cultural conversation around growing older, Moore is clear about the need for a collective shift. "We have to look at ageing differently; we can't wait for the outside to set the path, we have to set the path," she added.

It is a philosophy that feels very present in the choices Moore makes — the bold fashion, the dramatic hair reinventions, the willingness to show up and be seen, loudly and on her own terms.

Cannes 2026 is already shaping up to be one of Demi Moore's most talked-about festival appearances in years. And if the reaction to that blue gown and bouncy lob is anything to go by, she is nowhere near done surprising us.
