Twenty-one years may sound like a lifetime in Hollywood, but for many fans watching Hilary Duff step back onto the American Music Awards red carpet this week, it barely seemed to have passed at all.

On May 25, 2026, the singer and actress, 38, returned to the AMAs at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, appearing as a presenter for the first time since 2005.

Almost immediately, the photos began circulating online, and many people could not get over how little she appeared to have changed.

The Silver Gown That Sparked Immediate Comparisons

Duff arrived at the ceremony in a floor-length metallic silver chainmail gown featuring a plunging V-neckline and a sleek silhouette that closely traced her frame.

She paired the shimmering dress with silver strappy heels and minimal accessories, allowing the gown to remain the focus. Her blonde hair was styled in a soft, voluminous blowout, while her makeup stayed natural and understated.

The look quickly drew comparisons to the outfit she wore to the same awards show 21 years earlier.

Back in 2005, a then-17-year-old Duff attended the AMAs in a bronze pleated halterneck midi dress with navy velvet detailing at the neckline, black pointed heels, gold hoop earrings, and a half-up hairstyle complete with side bangs.

The similarities between the two appearances did not go unnoticed online.

Both looks leaned heavily into metallic tones. Both reflected the trends of their era. And both immediately became conversation starters.

Fans Could Not Believe How Little She Had Changed

As the comparison photos spread online, reactions poured in across social media. “Hilary Duff is a legend and she’s aged so gracefully,” one fan wrote.

Another asked, “why does she look the same as 2005?” A third commenter added, “Can’t believe she isn’t 30.”

Not every reaction focused entirely on the dress itself.

One viewer wrote, “That dress was ill-fitted,” while another commented, “That dress isn’t doing her any favors.”

Others disagreed completely.

“Hilary Duff looks gorgeous in that shimmering silver gown,” one fan wrote, while another added, “I like how simple and clean she’s dressed.”

Still, most of the attention centered on Duff herself rather than the outfit.

“She gets prettier and prettier as she ages just wow,” one admirer commented, while another simply wrote, “She never age she looks amazing.[sic]"

One remark that drew particular attention referenced both her appearance and family life at the same time:

“I can’t believe Hilary got 4 kids. Her body is insane.”

From Child Star to Early 2000s Icon

For many who grew up watching Duff, her AMA return felt strangely nostalgic.

Born Hilary Erhard Duff on September 28, 1987, in Houston, Texas, she began performing at a very young age alongside her older sister.

The sisters initially trained in Cecchetti Ballet before Duff decided around age six that she wanted to pursue acting more seriously.

Her first major starring role came in the 1998 film "Casper Meets Wendy."

But it was Disney Channel’s "Lizzie McGuire," which premiered in 2001, that transformed her into one of the defining teen stars of the early 2000s.

The success of "Lizzie McGuire" quickly turned Duff into one of the defining teen stars of the early 2000s, leading to films like "A Cinderella Story" and a music career that exploded almost simultaneously.

Songs like "Come Clean" and "So Yesterday" became staples of the era, and for a period of time, Duff seemed to be everywhere.

The Family Life She Built Away From the Spotlight

A great deal has changed for Duff since her first AMA appearance more than two decades ago.

While continuing to build her acting and music career, she also built a family life that now features heavily in the moments she shares online.

In a recent Instagram photo, Duff appeared smiling alongside her husband Matthew Koma and two of their daughters.

Duff and Koma share three daughters, while she is also mother to son Luca, whom she shares with former husband and retired hockey player Mike Comrie.

Over time, Duff’s social media presence has become noticeably more personal, focusing less on celebrity polish and more on candid family moments, parenting updates, and everyday life with her children.

A Busy Year Marked by Major Returns

The AMAs were only one part of what has already been an unusually eventful year for Duff. In February 2026, she released "luck... or something," her first studio album in more than a decade.

Earlier in the year, she also announced her first tour in over ten years. The Small Rooms, Big Nerves outing included stops in London, Toronto, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles.

While announcing the tour on Instagram, Duff admitted she was feeling both excited and anxious about returning to the stage. She wrote that she was "so ready (and okay, a tiny bit nervous)."

Then came another major career milestone.

In May 2026, Duff landed her first Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover, photographed by Kat Irlin on the beaches of South Caicos in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

One of the photos showed Duff seated on the sand in a dark navy one-shoulder swimsuit — an image that quickly sparked praise online and prompted many of the comments about her appearance.

Back on the AMA Stage After 21 Years

During the ceremony, Duff appeared as one of the evening’s presenters alongside names including John Legend, Lisa Rinna, Nikki Glaser, and Paula Abdul.

The event, hosted by Queen Latifah, aired live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ from Las Vegas.

As Duff posed for photographers in the silver gown and waved to cameras along the red carpet, many viewers seemed struck by the strange feeling that very little about her presence had changed at all.

Twenty-one years after first arriving at the AMAs as a teenage star, Duff returned to the spotlight with the same relaxed confidence that made her one of the defining faces of the early 2000s.

For many fans who grew up watching her, the moment felt less like a comeback and more like briefly stepping back into another era.
