Internet Users Discuss Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Behaviour During Their Visit to Jordan
A hospital room in Amman was meant to spotlight healing, resilience, and hope. Instead, it has become the latest flashpoint in a royal saga already simmering with tension.
During Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s two-day visit to Jordan, a brief bedside exchange with a teenage patient ignited fierce debate online, pulling focus from the couple’s humanitarian programme and thrusting one question into the spotlight.
What was meant to be a moment of compassion is now being dissected frame by frame, word by word.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in the country for meetings centred on global health, mental health support, and aid for communities affected by conflict and displacement. Their schedule included hospital visits, youth programmes, and discussions with medical teams.

But it is one moment, captured on video, that now defines the trip.
The Question That Sparked Backlash
While visiting Jordan’s Specialty Hospital, Harry and Meghan met Maria, a 14-year-old survivor from Gaza who is recovering from serious injuries.
In a widely circulated clip from the visit, a doctor explains that the original plan had been to amputate Maria’s leg as Harry sits at the foot of her hospital bed. He then asks, “Does she mind showing us?” After the doctor confirms she agreed, the blankets are lifted so the Duke and Duchess can see her injuries.
The video, shared online with the caption, “While meeting 14-year-old Maria, a survivor from Gaza currently recovering at Jordan’s Specialty Hospital, Prince Harry was heard asking if she minded showing her injuries to him and his wife Meghan,” spread rapidly across social media platforms.
The exchange lasts only seconds, but the reaction has lasted far longer.

Within minutes, comment sections filled with disbelief and anger. “How can they ask that..!!! Obviously she can't say no...🤦🏻,” one commenter wrote. “Shame thats aweful😢,[sic]” added another. A third zeroed in on Meghan’s positioning in the room. “lol meghan steps back like hellll no don't get near me.[sic]”
Another expressed confusion about the purpose of the moment. “What are they doing? And why? And to do what??!”

The Hospital Photo That Fuelled Speculation
An Instagram image from the visit showed Harry and Meghan standing alongside Maria, doctors, and hospital staff. The caption read:
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex met with medical teams and Maria, a 14-year-old survivor from Gaza currently recovering at the Specialty Hospital in Jordan. Grateful for the healthcare heroes providing a path toward healing for those affected by conflict.”
Even that carefully framed still image became a canvas for interpretation.

Commenters quickly turned their attention to body language. “Why does he stand back from her, as though she is the important one,” one person questioned, while another quipped, “His face says it all….. 🤷🏼♀️" A third said, "Harry looks like a wet Monday morning.”
Others widened the lens entirely, with one writing, “What a shock. Right after William’s middle eastern trip,” and another adding, “Somethings up, Harry looks angry and Megan looks not so happy 😬[sic].”
Within hours, analysis had drifted far beyond the hospital room. The online narrative expanded into speculation about rivalry, mood, and simmering royal tension.
A Broader Mission
Beyond the hospital ward, the Sussexes’ two-day trip included meetings and community visits centred on health and youth development.

Images shared online showed the couple greeting officials and participating in discussions in a conference setting. They also visited Questscope’s youth centre, a social development organisation supporting young people through creative and wellbeing programmes.
Photographs captured the pair smiling as they played football, viewed artwork, and listened to music performed by local children.

Those scenes reflected the stated aim of the visit: highlighting resilience, recovery, and mental wellbeing in communities affected by conflict.
Yet it is the bedside exchange that continues to circulate most widely, replayed and reinterpreted across platforms.
Scrutiny in a Charged Royal Climate
The timing of the Jordan visit has only intensified the reaction.
Back in the UK, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on February 19 at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He has not been charged and denies wrongdoing.
Police say the arrest allows officers to question him under caution and search properties as part of their investigation, with any charging decision to be made by the Crown Prosecution Service once inquiries are complete.
According to People, Prince Harry has long been frustrated by comparisons to his uncle, a sentiment that predates the arrest but has gained renewed relevance. An insider told the outlet:
“He was frustrated by the comparisons. It was never fair to lump them together. Harry served his country, did the job well and never engaged in misconduct — yet lost security and housing, while Andrew was protected for years.”

The source described Andrew’s arrest as “sad and embarrassing for the entire family” and said it “leaves a stain on everybody.”
Harry has previously written in his memoir “Spare” about what he viewed as disparities within the institution, noting that Andrew retained security despite what he described as a “shameful scandal” related to Jeffrey Epstein, while Harry and Meghan lost publicly funded protection after stepping back as senior royals in 2020.

In that context, every Sussex appearance carries added weight. Every gesture is examined, and every expression analysed.
A hospital room meant to highlight healing has instead reopened debate about optics, privilege, and power. In today’s hyper-connected world, even a few seconds of footage can ignite a global storm.
