These 6 Hollywood Blondes Once Went Brunette – Photos That Made Fans Think They Looked Better with Dark Hair
For decades, blonde hair has been a part of the public image for some of Hollywood's biggest stars. But now and then, a dramatic brunette transformation changes the conversation entirely — and fans often end up wondering whether the darker look suited them even better.
Paris Hilton sparked exactly that reaction last weekend when she stepped onto a runway in deep brown hair, leaving fans doing a double-take. But she is far from the only celebrity blonde to shock audiences by going dark.

On May 17, 2026, the "Come Alive" singer, 45, walked the Gucci Cruise 2027 runway in a yellow-and-gold puff-sleeved dress, black boots, and a fur coat, carrying a red handbag and sporting deep brown hair with side bangs.

The transformation has since been described as a big change from Hilton's usual platinum blonde hair. It came at the end of a busy stretch for the "Simple Life" alum and the Italian fashion house.

She had attended Milan Fashion Week in head-to-toe Gucci the month before, then spent the day before the New York show on a shopping spree at the Gucci store in Manhattan, posting:
"The best shopping spree is a @Gucci shopping spree 💁🏼♀️🛍️🛍️💃🏼🛍️🛍️ 💖 #GucciGirl 👑."
For someone who has made platinum blonde as much a part of her identity as her famous catchphrase, the transformation was the last thing anyone expected. And fans had plenty to say about it.
"I always thought she'd look better brunette. This just proves it," one fan wrote, another adding, "Loving the dark hair!" A third kept it simple, "That's iconic."
Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz stepped away from acting for over a decade before making her return, and her upcoming romantic comedy for Amazon MGM Studios has put her firmly back in the spotlight.

She stars opposite British comedian and writer Stephen Merchant in an upcoming romantic comedy, continuing a career that has kept her in the spotlight for decades.
Even so, very few moments from Cameron Diaz's career still generate as much discussion online as a single photograph from 2006, when she briefly traded her signature blonde hair for a darker look that fans have never quite forgotten.

"This is one of the most beautiful pictures of a woman I have ever seen. I prefer her as a brunette," one fan wrote, while another added, "She looks better with dark hair." A third did not mince their words, "Wow she really looks amazing I think that she looks better this way."
Cate Blanchett
When Cate Blanchett arrived at the 2019 BAFTAs in custom Christopher Kane and chestnut brown hair, the world barely recognized her.

Her makeup artist, Morag Ross, confirmed the look was done for a role at the National Theatre, suggesting it might only be temporary. Her long-term colorist, Nicola Clarke of John Frieda in London, styled the hair into a simple side parting for the ceremony using Virtue haircare products throughout.
Since shaving her head for a role in 2000, Blanchett, who was 49 at the time, had moved through various shades of blonde, from strawberry to cream, with one brief pink period along the way.

That made her appearance at the BAFTAs with rich brunette hair all the more striking. Presenting an award at the ceremony, Blanchett debuted a darker shade that could easily have passed for her natural color.
The transformation may have been temporary, but the impression it left was not. By most accounts, the brunette look suited Blanchett just as well, and fans did not hold back with their reactions.

"Cate Blanchett with dark hair supremacy," one wrote. Another said, "Cate Blanchett with dark hair has an effect on me," while a third added, "Cate blanchett with dark hair so true.[sic]"
Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon's blonde hair has long been part of her classic Hollywood image, which made her brunette era unexpectedly striking for fans revisiting old photos.

The darker shade softened her features in a way many viewers found unexpectedly striking, sparking a warm debate over whether it suited her even more than the blonde look that later became her signature.
“At first glance, I thought the brunette was a young Sally Fields, [sic]” one viewer noted. Another wrote, “Reese always looks great, but I love her brunette look more.”

A third simply added, “Brunette look better on her. [sic]" while a fourth agreed, “She looks great as a blonde, of course, but I really like the brunette even better.”
Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie debuted brunette hair at the 2014 Oscars, fresh from her breakthrough in "The Wolf of Wall Street," and she did not ease anyone into the change gently.

She had dyed her hair for a new role and chose the Oscars red carpet as the place to reveal it, pairing the dark color with vampy, gothic makeup: dark brows, dark shadow, and deep purple lips. It was described as quite a difference from her days as a blonde, and as a statement look, it was hard to ignore.
It was a bold choice for one of the industry's most recognized blondes, and it landed in two very different ways depending on who was watching. Some fans were immediately won over. Others were not, and they said so with the same level of conviction.

"Honestly, the brown suits her much better (but she's beautiful no matter what)," one fan wrote. "Even more beautiful SOME users didn't like her look [sic]," another wrote.
"It's still Margot Robbie, but I agree with the point you're making, it doesn't seem to suit her very well, at least not this dark," one commenter shared.

The opposing reaction was equally memorable, with another social media user joking, "Margot Robbie as a brunette is just as TERRIFYING as you probably imagined."
Blake Lively
In January 2023, Blake Lively, 35, posted a selfie to her Instagram Stories with her honey blonde hair transformed into a warm auburn, a long barrel curl over one shoulder, and a soft-glow filter over the whole image.

She added no caption and did not explain. The post coincided with news that she had been cast in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel "It Ends With Us" opposite Justin Baldoni.
Fans were not waiting for an answer. "Brunette hair really makes Blake Lively's ethereal face card stand out 🤌❣️," one wrote, a second adding, "Beautiful and gorgeous."

It was not the first time she had gone dark. Back in December 2017, Lively was spotted on the set of her drama "The Rhythm Section" in Dublin with a short, choppy brunette crop sitting somewhere between a pixie and a shag cut, with uneven proportions that grazed her brows.
The look rendered her almost unrecognizable, though it was noted to place a strong emphasis on her bone structure and features.

And while not every brunette transformation won unanimous approval, the reactions made one thing clear: when some of Hollywood's most recognizable blondes suddenly go dark, fans instantly begin reimagining them in an entirely new way.
