Kim Kardashian once again slammed for cultural appropriation
Kim Kardashian braids her hair and is accused of cultural appropriation
Kim Kardashian caused an uproar at the MTV Movie and TV Awards as she walked down the red carpet with her mother, Kris Jenner.
Usually, it's Kardashian's fashion sense that causes a stir, but this time all eyes were on her hairstyle. She had opted to braid her hair, although she had previously been criticised for doing so.
But, while Kardashian is used to causing a sartorial stir, it wasn’t the reality star’s ensemble that fired up controversy this time around, and her post on Twitter on the 17th of June 2018 attracted angry responses,
Back in January 2018, Kardashian had posted photos of herself wearing what she called her 'Bo Derek look,' after movie star and sex-symbol Bo Derek, who wore the hairstyle in the 1979 film 10. At the time, critics had accused Kardashian of cultural appropriation.
Many women of African American descent lashed out at the celebrity star, accusing Kardashian of 'stealing' their cultural heritage. Kardashian, who is of Armenian descent, did not respond to the accusations.
Another woman commented: “Kim Kardashian in these braids is exhausting. The most annoying part is that at this point she knows what she’s doing, she knows what cultural appropriation is and that it upsets people yet she still chooses to do it.”
In contrast, many other fans defended her, commenting that all it is is a hairstyle and that Kardashian has the right to wear her hair in braids if she so desires,
As a reality show star Kardashian is used to stirring up controversy with her attitudes, her clothing, her hairstyles, and to take the criticism on social media in her stride.
