Olivia Newton-John reflects on special 40-year bond with John Travolta

Forty years ago, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta starred in the movie Grease. That film brought the stars together in a bigger way as they found a lasting friendship with each other.

People reported that the two remained friends ever since and have been there for one another through thick and thin. The pair opened up about their inspiring relationship.

In 1978, 40 years ago, Olivia Newton-John, 69, and John Travolta, 64, came together to play Sandy and Danny in Grease. They made movie history with the film earning almost $400 million worldwide.

The iconic movie also cemented their long-lasting friendship. “We did something life-changing, making that film. [At the premiere] you got the feeling from the energy that something was happening,” Newton-John shared.

For more on this story go to our Twitter account @amomama_usa. In celebration of the huge milestone, Paramount recently released a 40th anniversary DVD edition of Grease.

It includes a fully restored version of the film and bonus features. Travolta, who was 23 when he starred in the film, shared that he and Newton-John have been by each other’s side through the best and worst times of their lives.

“I feel grateful to be a part of that and to have worked with him. We’ve stayed friends ever since.”

In 1991, he married actress Kelly Preston and is a father to Ella Bleu, 18, and Benjamin, 7. Their oldest son, Jett, died of a seizure in 2009.

Newton-John, on the other hand, has been married to John Easterling since 2008 and is a mother to Chloe, 32. Last spring she revealed that she was battling breast cancer again after first being diagnosed in 1992.

Talking about her enduring friendship with Travolta she shared that during tough times he always reached out to her. Travolta echoed the same sentiment.

“When you share that kind of meteoric success—and nothing has been able to exceed it—you share a bond,” he said.

He divulged that he’d been with her through the birth of her child, her divorced, and the loss of her sister. In turn, she’s been with him when he got married and having children.

He stated that their friendship was wonderful and full of shared memories.

Both actors chose not to star in Grease 2. However, they costarred again in Two of a Kind in 1983, which found no success, unfortunately.

In 2012, they released the album This Christmas which benefitted the actress’ Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre and his Jett Travolta Foundation for children with special needs.

Despite Newton-John living in Australia, the two continue to keep in touch and text often. Travolta shared that his friend was quite a ­spectacular human being who was worthy of a good friendship.
