Mother and son are now father and daughter

A father and daughter, Eric and Corey Maison, chronicled their gender transition journey on social media.

The duo posed for a photograph after Eric's first shot of testosterone and shared the photo on Instagram on January 13, 2017.

About five years ago, Corey told her parents that she identified herself as a girl. Much later, she learned that her mother also waged the same war inside her.

Eric, who used to go by Erica, felt he was encouraged by his daughter's decision.

The duo is now leaning on each other as they transition together.

15-year-old Corey decided to share their story on her Instagram account. They spoke to Australia's 60 Minutes to talk about their experience

The teen said, "I wanted to make my parents proud of who I am, but I thought that they would not like me."

For Eric, his daughter's revelation came as hope when he was struggling with his gender identity. He went through an emotional turmoil when deciding whether to transition.

He was relieved, but then it was a feeling of "terror" that engulfed him. He was fearful of his future, of how his family and children would react, and what the rest of his "life was going to look like."

Eric, who has undergone a double mastectomy, decided to go ahead with the transition with support from his husband, Les. The couple plans to stay together.

Les said that he fell in love with the person, who was as beautiful as a woman, and equally beautiful on the inside.

He supports Eric's choice because as long as he is happy with the appearance, he "will be happy with what is in his brain."

The father-of-five said that the only regret he had is not coming to terms with his gender identity earlier. He would have liked to be educated sooner so he could do it sooner.
