Gabby’s glamorous appearance alongside the popular pair is also a reminder of the amazing weight-loss journey she’s been through thanks to her positivity, determination and confidence. In May, the ‘Empire’ star debuted a slimmer figure celebrating her 35th birthday. Her weight loss was a result of a lap band surgery she underwent more than a year and a half ago. She was previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which prompted her to go under the knife.

Gabby is proud of what she achieved but in 2017, she took offense at people who complimented her on her weight loss. She told ABC News’ Robin Roberts that she found it weird when people congratulate her for her slimmed down figure.

“You don’t need to congratulate me on it. You don’t congratulate me every time I blow my nose. I needed to. It’s my body. Mind your own body.”

Gabby would rather she was praised for her talent or her voice or her work but never her body despite knowing people only had good intentions with their compliments. She also described people’s admiration as “so misogynistic.”

“We tell women what they need to look like, and what they don’t need to look like. There are plenty of like fat guys or whatever, and no one has ever written think pieces about why they need to lose weight. No one’s ever going to accuse them while they were, you know, on a show promoting their film, that they’re actually promoting an unhealthy diet.”

Details of Gabby’s weight-loss journey are all part of her book, ‘This is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare.’ She reveals how the surgeon cut her stomach in half to limit her hunger capacity and change her brain chemistry so she’d want to eat healthier.
