My daughter screamed accusations at me during a family reunion. I thought she was too young to remember it

Dear AmoMama,

Two weeks ago my mother turned 92, and we had a huge family reunion to celebrate it. All my brothers and sisters were there, and their children and my daughter and her children too.

My daughter is now 42, and has always had a volatile temper which I tried to curb when she was a child, but to no avail. Halfway through the party, she drank too much as usual and started talking too loud and laughing and behaving disgracefully.

I took her aside and told her to mind her manners and she started screaming at me so loudly that everyone came running.

She started screaming that I had no right to tell her what to do because I was a shitty mother and a monstrous bitch. She said she has never forgotten how I used to hit her on the soles of her feet when she was little so she had no marks to show her daddy when he came home, and how I'd lock her in the cupboard when she peed her bed, and wouldn't give her enough food so she was hungry because I didn't want her to be a fat pig like my sister's older daughter.

I was absolutely floored. I admit I was a little strict sometimes, but it was for her own good, since her father was too soft and lenient and spoiled her dreadfully.

I vaguely remember some incidents, but surely she couldn't have been more than 5 or 6, so how on earth would she remember?

My mother went to her and hugged her and took her into the garden and everyone just turned away from me. This stupid, hysterical woman has destroyed my reputation with my family!

I sent her an email, telling her I expect her to call everyone and recant those awful stories and then apologize to me. She hasn't answered me and blocked me from her phone! How can I make he see the right of it?
