Smith partnered with Kmart stores more than three decades ago and made a line of clothing. It wasn’t long before the line became the empire that it has become known today.

In an interview with Parade, Smith gushed that her brand had sold 700,000 slink T-shirts in 2017.

Smith was approached to create a fashion line 33 years ago. She shared that taking the meeting was just an impulsive choice and was not a business decision at the time.

“I figured I’d go in, see the store and meet the CEO. It fascinated me because my mother wanted to be a designer and she had clothes made for me,” she recalled.

The actress admitted that she initially turned down the offer since she “didn’t see fashion in Kmart.”

Eventually, she decided to have a second meeting, where she saw potential. Smith confessed that she knew it would be challenging since she was still unfamiliar with the business, but she ended up taking a shot.

Smith said yes to create the fashion line but insisted on being involved in the decision-making.

“I wanted to be consulted about hang tags and where the button goes,” she said.
