Donald Trump's condolence note about Kelly Preston's son's death that sparked online controversy
A note from the POTUS to a mother who lost her child is now making its way around the internet, and its contents aren't what one would expect given the occasion.
According to Huffington Post, Donald Trump wrote a note dedicated to actress Kelly Preston shortly after the death of her son, Jett, in January 2009, when the 16-year-old suffered a seizure.
Preston, who is married to actor John Travolta, was left devastated after the teenager's passing. The seizure had resulted in him hitting his head on the bathtub, resulting in serious injury.
This incident occurred during a family vacation in the Bahamas, at their Old Bahama Bay Hotel home, on Grand Bahama Island.
Tributes poured in from all around the globe for the Hollywood A-listers when the news broke.
Trump also dedicated a condolence note to Preston, but, unsurprisingly, it's not what one would expect. The note was posted on the Trump University Blog, which has since been shut down after the university became defunct.
The Republican president, as opposed to addressing her son's tragic death from the get-go, instead recalled trying to make advances to Preston after meeting her at a club one night.
He commented on her appearance, mentioned his supposed success rate with women, and managed to be surprised by her loyalty to her husband, all before he even mentioned her son or the tragedy that had befallen the family.
Then he ended the note, offering his condolences to Preston at last, in a one-line sentence.
"I have always respected people who were loyal and faithful--which brings to mind Kelly Preston. A long time ago, before I was married, I met Kelly Preston at a club and worked like hell to try and pick her up. She was beautiful, personable, and definitely had allure. At the time I had no idea she was married to John Travolta. "In any event, my track record on this subject has always been outstanding, but Kelly wouldn’t give me the time of day. She was very nice, very elegant, but I didn’t have a chance with her, and that was that."When I later found out she was married to John, I liked and respected her even more. Some people have values that matter to them, and she is one of them. Her loyalty was unwavering and I have always remembered that about her."Being true to someone is very close to being true to yourself. That’s a valuable attribute in today’s world. I’m sure she was a wonderful mother to Jett and my thoughts are with her and her family after their terrible loss," he wrote.
