Mel B's ex-nanny reportedly breaks silence on how drinking habits made her neglect her kids
Mel B is in serious trouble after a former caretaker for her children has finally spoken up about her bad drinking problems. Due to this addiction, the former nanny has said that she has neglected her children, and they shouldn't be left alone with her without supervision.
The former Spices Girls singer and her ex, Stephen Belafonte, are currently on court battling the custody of their children at a Los Angeles courtroom. Ahead of the hearing, a man named Russell Updegraff who reportedly served as caretaker to the couple's two kids for several months this year has filed a declaration narrating the singer's "serious drinking problem".
Russell declared that for the last seven months, he served as Angel and Madison's sole caregiver, and this has made him see some unpleasant sights such as seeing Mel drink daily, even "often passing out later in the day or blacking out."
The former caretaker even made sure to share details of her drinking habits, which includes starting the day with beer, sometimes as early as 10:00 am until she moves to wine or hard liquor.
According to the court documents obtained by The Blast,
“Melanie will become mean and belligerent or she will be completely off the rails in terms of her behavior. Melanie slurs her words and speaks incoherently about random topics and subjects and jumps from one story to the next, unable to finish one conversation or one task, jumping from one thing to the next.”
Updegraff even claims that the former Spice Girl has often asked her to get cocaine on her behalf, but claims he did not see her do it during his employment. However, he says that he knows she used to do it in the past.
“I recall that Melanie asked me if I could get her cocaine when she was in the hospital on the day she gave birth to Angel.”
According to his deposition, Mel's drinking has led her to become aggressive towards her children. At one time, Angel was extremely startled and ran to Russell's room after she claims her mother had grabbed her, shook her, and dug her nails into her.
She also brings "strange" men home, even describing an incident where he claims one of the men told the caretaker that he was taking Madison to the bathroom to shower her off after they were swimming in the pool. When Updegraff told her mother about the issue, she shrugged it off saying "that's how French people are."
He concludes his statement by saying:
“Aside from the obvious alcohol addiction and her addiction to multiple partners that she brings around the children, I truly believe that Melanie is mentally and/or psychologically unstable and is suffering from some form of mental health issue. I do not believe the children are safe in her custody without supervision or monitoring. I do not believe it is in the children’s best interests to be left in her care. Until Melanie gets the help that she needs, the children must be protected.”
The hearing was set in August 31, 2018, and details of it has yet to be released to the media.
