After shaving for the first time in 12 years, veteran looks absolutely unrecognizable
She explained that while she didn't expect him to go completely clean shaven and bald, she wanted him to look a little neater than his long hair and beard permitted.
Josh is a 40-year-old military veteran who, after years serving and adhering to strict regulations regarding his hair and beard, decided to completely "let himself go," so to speak, when he was discharged from the military 14 years ago.
Since then, he hasn't had a proper haircut, or shaved his beard, trimming only the very ends of it on occasion.
In 2016, his girlfriend, Heidi, spoke up about wanting him to get a bit of a makeover to make him look more presentable. Not only was he overly hairy, but he also dressed in the same jeans and white t-shirt look every day.

While Josh seemed highly reluctant to make any major changes, he had softened to her viewpoint over time, and had decided to give in and allow her to get him a makeover.
Enter Oprah Winfrey.
The media mogul recruited "Project Runway" star Tim Gunn as the lead stylist in Josh's case, tasking Gunn with giving the vet a totally new (but still totally him) look that both he and Heidi could be happy with.
After plenty of work, Josh looked like a completely different man.
With the shorter hair and neatly trimmed beard, Heidi could hardly believe the man standing in front of her was her boyfriend, but she was definitely pleased with the new look.
“He looks great, and this is exactly what I’ve been trying to get him to do. He still has beard and [facial] hair, but he looks great. I can’t get over it. Thank you, Tim!"
Josh also seemed quite impressed with how everything had turned out, even though he confessed to being hesitant beforehand.

“In working with all these men, I never want to make anyone into my dress-up doll. It’s all about respecting who they are at their core, making them better, enhancing them,” Gunn said. "And frankly, I didn't want to take Josh's beard completely off. The easiest thing would be to just strip them all clean and put them all in a tux, they'll look fabulous. But how do you make them really resonate who they are, and look like they're polished, and sophisticated, and belong to this century."
Josh added "I feel like a new man."
