Sudanese model stuns the crowd in daring velvet dress at this year's Emmy Awards
Sudanese model Nyakim Gatwech was an absolute head-turner sporting a daring velvet dress at this year's Emmy Awards.
10 years prior to that night, Nyakim Gatwech was residing in a refugee camp in Kenya, dreaming of becoming a model as she watched an episode of "America's Next Top Model" and browsing through fashion publications.
Now, the 24-year-old is based in Minnesota and has been booked for major campaigns and partnerships with brands like Calvin Klein, Fashion Nova, Aldo, L'Oreal, and even BET for their "Black Like Me" series.
This year, she was given the chance to attend the Emmy Awards, and she looked absolutely breathtaking.
Although she has made a name for herself in the fashion industry recently, this has not always been the case for her. Her road to becoming a model was tough, and of course, she did not always fit in.
After living in a refugee camp, she moved to Buffalo, New York, where she experienced extreme bullying at 14-years-old.
“They would say, you know, I’m too Black, my skin is too dark. They’d be like, 'You don’t take showers. That’s why your skin is dirt.' Or, 'Smile so we can see you, Nyakim. We can’t see you.' And then, in class, for example, the teacher would ask a question and say, 'Oh, Nyakim, can you answer that?' A kid would say, 'Who are you talking to? We can’t see her. She’s not here.' The whole class would start laughing, and I would just cry.”
Throughout her stay in America, Nyakim has been the victim of discrimination due to the color of her skin. While riding a cab in New York, a driver even suggested that she should bleach her skin to look more desirable to men and companies that she could work for. At one point, she almost even listened, until her sister had talked her out of it.
Finally realizing her beauty and her self-worth, Nyakim now has a booming modeling career, which has given her entry to some of the biggest nights in Hollywood.
Dressed in a pink and gold velvet dress, she stunned the red carpet and was the epitome of grace and elegance, much to the amazement of other guests.
She was definitely a sight to see as if making a statement for the world to watch out for her, as she is only getting started.
