Prince Harry opens up about how he asked Prince Charles to walk Meghan down the aisle

Ahead of Prince Charles’ 70th birthday celebration BBC One released a documentary called “Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.” One of the topics tackle on the show was Prince Harry’s wedding.

Harry was asked how he got his father, Charles, to walk his then-fiancée down the aisle. They newlywed’s answer revealed the kind of relationship he has with his father.

Things were quite tense ahead of Prince Harry’s May 19, wedding when Duchess Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, revealed he wouldn’t make it. The question on fans lips was who would walk Meghan down the aisle.

Luckily, Prince Harry, 34, had a plan. He went to his father, Prince Charles, who will celebrate his 70th birthday next week, to ask him to take on the important role.

The young prince shared:

“I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you.’”

Harry further added:

“For him, that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father so of course he’s gonna be there for us.”

On the wedding day, as Charles handed Meghan over to his son, Harry was heard saying, “Thank you, Pa.” Duchess Camilla, Charles’ wife, couldn’t hear what Harry said to his father at the altar on that day, but later on, she watched it on TV.

She shared her thoughts on the moment saying:

“I think that was very touching, sitting where I was, you couldn’t hear what he said. But afterward watching it on the television, I… I think it was a very… it was a lovely gesture.”

Harry added that he had to thank his father and him being his parent didn’t mean he shouldn’t be grateful for what he did. The young prince felt being humble in that situation was very important.

Another special moment featuring Charles was when he led Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, by the arm to head into a private room to sign the marriage register.

Of that moment Camilla said:

“A lot of people, seeing my husband actually take the bride’s mother by the hand to sign the registry, it’s something that moved everybody. It’s the things he does behind the scenes that people don’t know about. I don’t think people realize quite how kind he is.”

While on a Royal visit to Ghana, Charles opened up about his worries for the future of his fourth grandchild. The prince admitted that he was concerned, in part, because of the environmental issues facing the world such as plastic pollution.

He warned that future generations would face a "completely polluted, damaged and destroyed world" unless action is taken. Harry and Meghan are expecting their first child together next Spring.
