Donald and Melania welcomed guests from behind a podium where the First Lady said:
“I just want to wish you Merry Christmas, and a happy, prosperous and peaceful New Year, and enjoy the White House.”
The 48-year-old Melania looked stunning in a belted white dress. Her hair was loose and wavy and a face adorned with smiles.
The lavish event featured an orchestra with members dressed up in red jackets, matching the color of the drapery in the room, while the conductor looked regal in a jacket with gold embellishments.
Decor stunned with Christmas trees extending almost to the ceiling, adorned with eagles at the top. Red ribbons weaved through the branches with a colorful display of red, gold and silver ornaments in all shapes and sizes carefully draping from the trees.
Earlier in the day, Melania kicked off the holiday season engagements as she attended an event at The American Red Cross National Headquarters with US Second Lady, 61-year-old Karen Pence.
During the event, the ladies helped assemble care packages for US troops stationed abroad during the holidays.
Melania picked a casual outfit for the event and kept in line with festive colors reflected in her vibrant red cigarette style trousers and red ballet pumps, with a navy blue jumper.
Her hair loosely waved over her shoulders while her makeup was more simplistic with dark eyeshadow and rose pink lipstick.
After the event she posted a series of pictures to Twitter which she captioned:
“As the holiday season begins, we remember all our brave men and women serving overseas. Honored to join @SecondLady at the @RedCross this morning to make comfort kits for our troops currently deployed. Thank you for your service!”
When Melania took to Twitter on Monday to share the Christmas decorations she designed for the White House, responses got descriptively negative while others found it breathtaking.
Even though the reasoning behind the decorations was patriotic, as Melania wanted to show recognition for the country’s "unique heritage," many compared the "blood red trees" to similar trees display in movies like "The Shining," "Monsters, Inc." and "The Handmaid’s Tale."
