Following the death of his father, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush honored him with a heartwarming tribute describing him as a “man of the highest character.”
The 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush died in his home on Friday at the age of 94.
He left behind a grieving family led by his son and White House successor, George W. Bush. In a social media post, the younger Bush expressed his sadness and was equally grateful for his father’s “remarkable years.”
George H.W. passed away just eight months after his wife, Barbara Pierce Bush died on April 17. Her death seemed to weaken him because he was admitted to the hospital just a day after Barbara’s funeral due to a blood infection.
A month later, he was hospitalized again due to low blood pressure and fatigue.
George H.W. had been married to Barbara for 73 years at the time of her death. They shared six children – George W., Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Dorothy and Robin who died of leukemia at the age of three in 1953.
“George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for."
In behalf of his siblings, George W. expressed the family’s grief over their father’s passing by sharing a tribute on Instagram.
His message was accompanied by a photo of his late father and mother walking side by side towards a chopper with their hands on each other’s backs.
“Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died,” the former president began.
“George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for the 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.”
George H.W. started a Texan oil business that made him a millionaire at the age of 40. In 1964, he joined politics and eventually served one term as president between 1989 and 1993.
His reign saw the end of the Cold War and the first Iraq war against Saddam Hussein. He was defeated by Bill Clinton in his bid for a reelection.
Along with his son, other US presidents also shared their warmest thoughts on George H.W.’s passing. President Donald Trump who doesn’t have the best relations with the Bush family paid tribute to “his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family and country.”
George H.W. will be laid to rest on December 5, which was also designated as a day of national mourning by the White House whose flag is currently lowered at half-staff.
