19-year-old college student finished her final exam while in labor at the hospital
Sophomore college student finished her final exam while in labor. She ended the semester with a high GPA and a cute baby boy amidst experiencing complications in labor.
Nayzia Thomas, a 19-year-old college sophomore at Johnson County Community College in Kansas City, Missouri did not want to delay the submission of her final exam. She had a strong mindset and wanted to finish her psychology test right away, even if it meant bringing her school materials to the hospital and working while in labor.
Thomas posted a photo on Twitter, which her mom took, of herself in the hospital bed, with books and a laptop – finishing her assignment. The caption said “my mom took this pic & it’s the perfect explanation of my life. Yes, I’m about to have a baby, but final SZN ain’t over yet.” The tweet quickly went viral, and it’s not even surprising why.
According to Yahoo Lifestyle, Nayzia said,
“It wasn’t due until the end of the week – finals week is Dec. 11 to tomorrow – but my goal was to try to have everything done before. [I thought] ‘before all this gets crazy let me hurry up and finish this final.” Additionally, she said “School is important to me. I didn’t want [the pregnancy] to be in the way. That’s what people expect. You’re a teen mom, you’re a young mother. That’s why my mom took that picture.”
A follow-up tweet said,
“update: on 12/12/17 we had a healthy baby boy. However, I experienced major blood loss & my body went into shock post-delivery. It was very scary, but his father was right there to take over when I went unconscious. We are blessed! AND I’m finishing the semester w/ a 3.5 GPA!”
Nayzia just showed that there is no excuse for slacking off, not even being in labor. At 19 years young, she showed strength, determination, and perseverance – and we should all take note of it. The twitter world showed respect and appreciation for this amazing woman who displayed a great example to the youth – not the part of being a teenage mom though, but credit should be given for her taking full responsibility and thriving to be a great student.
Women have been on a roll at breaking gender stereotypes and proving their capabilities to the world. Just last month, a student who graduated from Harvard School of Law after going into labor during her final exam week. Her pregnancy did not make her think twice about dropping out. These women have inspired us all.
