Former President George W. Bush supports federal workers with free pizza amid shutdown
The 43rd President of The United States of America showed support to the federal workers feeling the brunt of the shutdown. Presidents are supposed to care for their constituents, regardless of whether they are in the office or not.
Former President George W Bush exemplified this when he, alongside his wife, Laura, hand-delivered boxes of pizza to those currently enduring the consequences of the ongoing government shutdown. He shared a picture of himself, on his Instagram page, on Friday.
In the caption, he expressed his gratitude to the Secret Service personnel and every other worker who keeps working for the country despite not getting paid.
'And we thank our fellow citizens who are supporting them. It’s time for leaders on both sides to put politics aside, come together, and end this shutdown,' - he concluded.
He subtly called on the presidency and the legislature to put an end to the situation.
The shutdown, which is now in its 31st day, commenced on December 22, and is now the most extended shutdown in US history, surpassing the 21-day long cease of 1995-1996 during the Clinton administration. This current close down has affected about 800,000 workers. President Donald Trump had suggested earlier that the cease could last months or even years if he does not get the funds needed to fulfill a campaign promise of building a wall at the US border with Mexico.
Trump had also considered declaring a national emergency to build the wall without congressional approval. Interestingly, federal workers aren't the only ones to have felt the goodness of George W Bush.
Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, shared some heartwarming moments with the 72-year-old in December 2018. During former President George H W Bush's funeral service in December last year, 43, as Bush is often fondly referred to, was seen greeting The Obamas.
He then passed a mint to Michelle, making her laugh. George had also previously given candy to the former first lady while Senator Joe Lieberman was delivering his eulogy during the funeral of Senator John McCain on September 1.
When asked about her famous candy exchanges, Obama had appreciated Bush's sense of humor saying:
'He made it a point to give me that mint right then and there, and that's the beauty of George Bush.'
