What began as a public outpouring of grief soon took on a heavier edge, as a close friend's deeply personal tribute arrived alongside a sobering new development in the case. As heartbreak ripples through the hockey world, one especially emotional message captures the impossible reality of mourning while painful questions still linger.

In the days after the White Bear Lake fire, thousands of people who had never met Jessi Pierce felt they had lost someone. The outpouring has been immediate, emotional, and relentless.

A Family Gone Too Soon

Only hours before the tragedy, the four were out enjoying the first tastes of spring, documenting a Friday full of smiles and local treats. They enjoyed their Friday but didn't live to see Saturday; in fact, they never even had the chance to wake up as the weekend began.

They likely had a full itinerary of hockey and family fun planned for the rest of the month, but those plans were cut short in the pre-dawn darkness. What exactly happened in the early morning stillness of that White Bear Lake home?

A Tornado of Smoke

Just before 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, the quiet suburban street became a nightmare of sirens and flames. Neighbors spotted fire tearing through the roof of the Pierce home and frantically called 911, fearing the family was trapped inside.

The White Bear Lake Fire Department arrived to find a fully involved structure fire and worked to suppress the blaze. When crews were finally able to enter the home, they found an adult, three children, and the family dog, all deceased.

The blaze had already consumed much of the two-story home. Fire Chief Greg Peterson issued a brief statement, calling it "a tragedy that has shaken this community," and urged privacy and compassion as investigators work to determine the cause.

The Victims: A Family Loved by All

Authorities did not immediately identify the victims, but by Saturday evening, heartbreak spread online as multiple outlets confirmed that the victims were Jessi and her children, Hudson, Cayden, and Avery.

Neighbor Julie Andrus, who had lived next door to the Pierces for seven years, described the family as "so nice" and recalled the children always playing outside.

Of the fire itself, she told the Star Tribune, "We were sleeping. By the time the cops woke us, it was like a tornado of smoke."

One Last Outing

The day before the fire, Jessi had taken Hudson, Cayden, and Avery to the seasonal opening of Cup and Cone, a beloved local ice cream spot in White Bear Lake.

She posted a photo of the long line stretching down the sidewalk on X, captioning it "Cup and cone opening day 3/20/26."

She was a constant presence at Minnesota Wild home games, often bundled up against the press box chill at Grand Casino Arena, and was the kind of person who made everyone around her feel seen, whether it was their first meeting or their 50th.

Beyond her writing, she hosted and featured on hockey podcasts at SKOR North, carving out a reputation across Minnesota as someone who genuinely loved the sport and the people in it. Players, coaches, and front office staff alike knew her by name.

Colleagues consistently described her as someone who brought energy and openness to a beat that runs on trust.

A Friendship That Went Far Beyond the Rink

There are tributes that feel expected after a devastating loss, and then there are the ones that stop you cold. In the days after Jessi and her three children died in that tragic, fatal house fire, her Colleague Kirsten Krull shared a message so raw and personal that it changed the shape of the story.

At first, Kirsten didn't lead with answers… She led with grief. Jessi's death has already sent shockwaves through the hockey world, where she was known not just for covering the game, but for making it feel more human.

And as those who knew her began sharing what she meant to them, one theme kept surfacing again and again: Jessi didn't just report on hockey; she built a community around it.

That's what made Kirsten's words hit especially hard. Their friendship wasn't a casual work connection or a polite industry bond, as they had a rhythm, a routine, and a Monday tradition that suddenly vanished. And in Kirsten's telling, that ordinary detail makes the tragedy feel even more brutal.

Before opening up about that painful emptiness, Kirsten had already shared a deeply emotional tribute in a March 22 post on X, alongside two personal photos. In it, she made clear that Jessi was far more than a colleague.

"Family isn't always blood, but the people you choose and [sic] that couldn't have been more true," Kirsten wrote. She said Jessi "was like another big sister" to her, remembering her as someone with confidence, a rare ease with people, an unmatched work ethic, and a huge heart.

Kirsten said Jessi was the person she could turn to whenever she needed help, needed to vent, or simply needed someone there. In her words, Jessi showed up "without hesitation," which says just about everything about the kind of friend the late NHL reporter was.

She also painted a tender picture of Jessi away from the rink and the microphone, penning that Jessi "was the best mom and loved her kids and family fiercely," a line that lands with heartbreaking force given what happened.

Kirsten said Jessi didn't just welcome her into her orbit; she brought her fully into her world. She wrote that Jessi introduced her to her family and friends, and that she was grateful to have known Hudson, Cayden, and Avery.

The memories Kirsten chose to highlight made the post even more intimate. She remembered game days, time spent at the family's home, and simply hanging out together, the kind of moments that may seem small from the outside, but become priceless in hindsight.

"There's not [sic] enough pictures, videos, memories I can share in one post," Kirsten wrote. She added that there was so much more she wanted to say, but she couldn't yet find the words.

Still, Kirsten made sure Jessi, in spirit, and her loved ones heard what mattered most: She said she hoped they knew just how loved they are, and just how visible that love has become across the hockey community.

"I hope you know how much I love you and how missed you will be. Thank you for everything. Please keep Mike, the family, and everyone who loved Jessi in your prayers [sic]," she concluded.

The Crueler Side of Grief

That first post was emotional enough on its own. But what Kirsten shared the next day revealed the quieter, crueler side of grief, the part that shows up when the world keeps moving along anyway.

In a second statement on X on March 23, Kirsten wrote about the simple Monday routine she used to share with Jessi: recording the Bardown Beauties podcast. Her phone buzzed that morning with the usual reminder that it was time to record, except, as she put it, "today it's not."

That notification became the start of a devastating reflection. Kirsten wrote that logging onto her computer and sitting at her desk with the same microphone where they had recorded together was "another hard thing" she hadn't yet done, but knew she had to keep doing.

Then came the line that captured the emotional center of her post, and arguably this entire heartbreaking moment:

"It's cruel that the world doesn't stop when terrible things happen [sic] even when we desperately beg for it to."

Kirsten said she knows she and many others are feeling that same impossible tension, and highlighted how the world keeps moving even when people feel like they can't.

"All we can do is continue to try to move forward the best we can," she said. And in one of the most affecting parts of the post, Kirsten admitted her heart hurts for everyone who was just trying to make it through the day.

Even so, she said she plans to keep her Monday podcast record notifications on. Why? Because they remind her of how much special time she was able to share with Jessi every week.

A Ray of Light in the Hockey Community

What makes Kirsten's tributes even more poignant is how closely they align with the way others described Jessi in the days after her death. Jessi isn't remembered as someone who simply occupied space in the hockey world; she expanded it.

As Heather Rule reported for Written Rule of Sports, Minnesota Frost forward and Olympic gold Medalist Kelly Pannek knew Jessi from multiple corners of the game, especially as a host. Jessi emceed several Frost events during the league's first few seasons and, earlier this month, hosted an event for Kelly celebrating both her Olympic gold medal and the launch of a new beer.

That event took on even deeper meaning after the tragedy because Jessi brought her daughter, Avery, with her. Jessi and Avery posed for photos with Kelly and her gold medals before attending the Frost's first home game after the Olympic break later that week.

"Knowing now what happened, I think it's just really cool that Avery got to experience that as well, and for Jessi to be able to experience that with her daughter," Kelly said. It's a beautiful memory, and now, an especially painful one.

Taken together, those stories explain why Jessi's loss has resonated so widely. She left behind not just headlines and bylines, but relationships, rituals, and memories that keep resurfacing in deeply personal ways.

A New Update in the Fire Investigation

And that brings the story to the detail Kirsten did not spotlight in her post, but which arrived the very same day she shared it. While she was writing about how cruel it feels when life goes on after unimaginable loss, officials also released a new public update on the fire investigation.

In a March 23 update from the White Bear Lake Fire Department, shared with the message, "Thank you for the continued support during these very difficult times. Below is the latest update on the fatal fire that occurred on Saturday, March 21st, 2026," authorities said the investigation remains in its early stages.

The department said it is working alongside the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office and dedicating all possible resources to determining what led to the tragedy. Officials also shared that their preliminary findings had not uncovered any evidence that the fire was intentionally set.

At the same time, they stressed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. According to the release, the official cause and any further information will be made public once the investigation is complete.

The department also used the update to address the community directly. It said its top priorities were being present for those directly affected, conducting a thorough investigation, and making sure first responders involved in the incident could heal alongside the wider community.

Officials added that White Bear Lake's embedded mental health professional had been working with staff to ensure responders had the support they needed. The release also thanked the community for standing behind first responders and emergency services during an extraordinarily painful moment.

In other words, the update offered one answer, but not the final one. And that is part of what makes Kirsten's words linger.

Because while the investigation continues, those closest to Jessi are already living with the part no official statement can resolve: the silence left behind by someone who made people feel seen, included, and loved. The facts are still being gathered, but the loss is already painfully clear.

Tributes Pour In from the Hockey World

By Sunday morning, social media was flooded with tributes from colleagues and fans.

Veteran reporter Michael Russo of The Athletic shared a long, emotional tribute remembering Jessi as "the most vibrant person — the life of the party, always with a smile on her face."

Michael's tribute also turned to Jessi's husband, Mike Hinrichs, who was not home when the fire broke out, making him the sole survivor of his immediate family. "My heart breaks for Mike for the loss of his wife and children and Jessi's family, friends, and colleagues for this unimaginable loss."

Michael had seen Jessi just the morning before the fire, at Wild practice, wearing her Iowa State sweatshirt and already counting down the hours until the Cup and Cone outing with her kids.

"I have literally NEVER met anybody that had a way of being EVERYBODY's friend," he wrote.

He ended with words that echoed across hockey's tight-knit media world: "Life can be unbearably unfair sometimes, and it’s impossible to make sense of this tragedy."

A Community in Mourning

Within days, those closest to the family launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Mike cover funeral costs and steady himself financially through the grief ahead. By Monday, donors had contributed more than $62,000 of the initial $80,000 goal. Currently, the donations sit at over $206,000.

The campaign paints a picture of a woman who poured herself into motherhood, driven by a need to make every day count for her children. Each of the three kids had a personality all their own, the post notes, but all three shared their mother's appetite for fun and adventure.

As Michael summed up what the broader hockey community is sitting with: "This hockey community lost a wonderful, energetic, and [one-of-a-kind] voice and storyteller and Grade A person." The press box, he said, will never quite be the same.

Mike Hinrichs Finally Speaks

Through all of it — the tributes, the donations, the grief playing out publicly across every corner of the hockey world — Mike had initially said nothing. Then, in a statement released in the days following the fire, he broke that silence.

"Jessi was beautiful, vibrant, and full of life - she lit up every room she walked into and made everyone feel welcome," he said. "She left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to know her." In just two sentences, Mike said what an entire community had been circling all week.

The final mystery of what started the fire still lingers. Yet for those who knew her, the greater question can't be solved with science or reports: How do you fill the silence left by someone who made every room brighter?

At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Mike, the entire Pierce and Hinrichs family, their loved ones, friends, community, and all who knew and loved Jessi and her three children as they mourn such a significant loss. We hope for their healing amid their time of grief. RIP, dear Jessi, Hudson, Cayden, and Avery.
