Provo Fire Captain's Wife Made One Last Post Before the Flash Flood That Killed Most of Her Family

The family loved exploring Utah's outdoors together, but a mother's final video and the training her absent daughter had just completed now feel painfully significant.

Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife, Katrina Long, and their sons Reid Vernon, Thayne Long, and Gage Long died in a flash flood near Bicknell, Utah, on July 17, 2026. Their eldest child, Lydia Vernon, was the only immediate family member not on the trip and therefore the only survivor.

As a community, two painful details have emerged: the eerie subject of Katrina's final video and the lifesaving skill Lydia had only recently gained.

A Family Excursion Ended in the Wash

The family arrived near Sunglow Campground in Wayne County at approximately 11:30 a.m. that Friday. They had planned to camp, hike, and go canyoneering in the rugged area about an hour south of Richfield.

At roughly 5 p.m., deputies responded after someone reported finding a body. They discovered a young male in a wash and activated Wayne County Search and Rescue to look for the rest of the missing group.

Two more males were found in the same wash during the initial search. Teams located the other two family members on Saturday, with all five bodies recovered by about 12:15 p.m.

Officials believed heavy rainfall caused the flooding that swept through the area. Provo Fire and Rescue later confirmed the identities of Spencer, Katrina, Reid, Thayne, and Gage.

Lydia, Katrina's daughter from a previous marriage, was the only one of the four children who did not accompany them. She was working in Kentucky as she had recently graduated, while the rest of her family made the trip.

The loss spread far beyond their home. Spencer Long had served with Provo Fire and Rescue for 17 years and had been a captain for the last two, making his death deeply personal for first responders across Utah.

Firefighters Lined the Road Home

On Tuesday, July 21, Provo Fire and Rescue crews escorted the family from the state medical examiner's office in Taylorsville to a mortuary in Spanish Fork. Firefighters from several agencies stood on Interstate 15 overpasses as the procession traveled south.

Images from the escort showed emergency vehicles moving beneath the assembled crews. The quiet tribute reflected how widely Spencer was respected, even among people who had never worked beside him.

Lorie Nilson attended because her own husband had spent 21 years as a firefighter. "It's just so sad and shocking," she said. "It's crazy how fast things can change as you're out and about."

Provo Fire Chief Jeremy Headman remembered Spencer as an "amazing firefighter" and a "great paramedic" who readily volunteered when help was needed. Spencer served with the federal search and rescue group Utah Task Force One and belonged to Provo Fire's mountain rescue team.

Yet the quality Chief Headman emphasized most had little to do with Spencer's uniform. "The thing that stands out the most about Capt. Long was his love for his family," the chief said during a news conference that same day.

"He spent an enormous amount of time out in the outdoors with his boys."

That love of the outdoors was shared by Katrina, which made the location of the family's deaths especially painful for those who knew her.

Friends Remembered the Woman Behind the Business

Katrina was also a pillar in the area. She was a co-founder of Summit Medical Spa, a Utah business offering massage, post-operative lymphatic services, hormone and weight-loss care, and skin and intimate wellness treatments.

Friends described her as a determined entrepreneur whose guarded first impression gave way to warmth once people knew her.

Dozens gathered at the spa's Spanish Fork location for a candlelight vigil on Sunday, July 19. Close friend and co-worker Meagan Dexter said the family spent considerable time exploring mountains and canyons.

"Knowing that all of this happened in a canyon just kind of breaks my heart," she said.

Katrina built a blended family with Spencer after they met while she was working at Red Mountain Spa. She already had Reid and Lydia, and the couple later welcomed Thayne and Gage, who played hockey and shared their parents' enthusiasm for outdoor adventures.

Business partner Sam Butler recalled realizing how Spencer welcomed her older children immediately. "He wanted to start a family and love Reid and Lydia like his own. I knew he was good," she said.

Katrina's care extended into her workplace. After Meagan confided in her about fertility problems, Katrina opened the spa's services to her and encouraged her to explore testing and treatment without worrying about the cost.

The business also reflected Katrina's familiarity with the strain placed on emergency workers. Through Spencer, she had seen what firefighters and search-and-rescue crews carried home after difficult calls.

Katrina wanted first responders to have somewhere they could process grief, even if they were not ready to speak about it. That part of her work now feels especially relevant, as the same community she hoped to support has been grieving her family.

Only days before her death, however, Katrina shared something much more serious. The video was practical when she posted it, but its subject is chilling in hindsight.

Her Final Video Was About Saving a Life

Katrina's last Instagram post was a collaboration between her personal profile and Summit Medical Spa. The video showed the entire spa staff receiving CPR training and learning how to use an automated external defibrillator.

In the caption, Katrina's business thanked Utah Medic for training and recertifying the team. She explained that Utah Medic had returned every two years for the previous six years to keep everyone's emergency knowledge up to date.

The lessons had already proved valuable away from work. According to Katrina, staff members had needed to apply what they had learned to their own relatives three times during the previous year.

"Thank you for helping us stay up to date on our knowledge so we can be useful at work, home and in every day life situations to help those around us," she wrote.

There was nothing ominous about the message at the time. Katrina was encouraging preparedness and celebrating skills that could protect another person during a crisis. But after a sudden flood took her life and the lives of four people closest to her, the post is more than a little ironic.

And this training creates a painful connection to Lydia, who had recently completed medical training of her own.

Lydia Had Just Earned Her Degree

Lydia was the eldest of the four children and the family's only daughter. Her social media photographs showed a close household that repeatedly gathered for portraits, celebrations, and outdoor outings.

A 2019 family gallery captured that bond years before the fatal trip. Spencer appeared fully woven into the blended family Katrina had created with him.

Lydia's longtime boyfriend was also frequently present in family photographs. In April 2026, she celebrated their fifth anniversary by sharing pictures of the couple standing together in a field.

"Thank you for always knowing how to love me, hold me, and convince me that I can in fact get through nursing school;) <3," Lydia wrote in the anniversary caption.

The following month, she shared another outdoor photo session, this time wearing a cap and gown. Some images included a stethoscope, signaling that the demanding years mentioned in her anniversary post had finally led somewhere.

"Graduating this week and I couldn't be more excited to put BSN behind my name!🩺" she wrote beside the graduation photos.

Lydia's nursing knowledge might have been valuable during an emergency, but she was hundreds of miles away when the flood struck. The very absence that spared her life also meant she could not be beside the people she had been trained to help.

A Community Gathered Around the Daughter Left Behind

When Lydia returned to the family home, she did not arrive alone. Friends, firefighters, and members of the hockey community lined the neighborhood streets to welcome her.

Chief Headman described the scene as an outpouring of love. It offered a small measure of support to a young woman facing funeral arrangements, and a future dramatically changed in a single day.

Bree Nielson, whose husband began working with Spencer 12 years earlier, organized a GoFundMe for Lydia. Bree said the two families had shared trips and milestones as her own friendship with Katrina grew.

The fundraiser was created to help with funeral and memorial costs, housing, counseling, education, daily expenses, and other needs. It had raised $288,765 toward its $300,000 goal, reaching 97 percent as of this publication.

"No amount of money can take away Lydia's pain or replace the family she has lost," Bree wrote. She asked supporters to help ease Lydia's practical burdens while reminding her that she was not alone.

Regarding the incident, authorities have no reason to believe that anything aside from flash flooding occurred, but the case remains under investigation. Search personnel eventually cleared the area, and it was reopened to the public.

For Lydia, however, there could be no simple return to normal. The photographs preserve the family as she knew it, while Katrina's final video leaves behind one last reflection of the life her mother built: a life devoted to making sure the people around her were cared for.
