'All My Children' Actor Paul Avery and His Wife Sheila Were Pulled from Their Burning Home Before the Unthinkable Happened
A devastating house fire claimed the lives of former "All My Children" actor Paul Avery and his wife, Sheila, after a late-night rescue effort that briefly offered hope before tragedy struck.
The beloved daytime TV star and his wonderful partner were pillars of their small community for several decades. Fans and neighbors are still trying to understand how a normal evening turned into an absolute nightmare after the couple's peaceful wooded sanctuary turned into a massive inferno.
First responders successfully pulled the unconscious couple from the thick, suffocating smoke. But what happened immediately after they breached the front door would change the community forever.
The Midnight Alarm That Mobilized a Quiet New Jersey Town
The peace of the quiet Blairstown neighborhood in New Jersey was shattered during the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Emergency dispatchers received a call about a massive residential blaze on Mohican Road.
New Jersey State Police troopers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a residential structure fire with possible entrapment. When authorities arrived, they found the home completely engulfed in flames.
The intense heat and towering walls of fire complicated the emergency response. Volunteer firefighters quickly prepared to enter the burning building.
Inside the Wooded Retreat Where an Actor Cared for His Wife
The stakes were remarkably high because two deeply cherished community members were trapped inside the structure. Paul Avery lived a life that felt like a Hollywood movie script. His closest friends often called him the most interesting man in the world because of his endless talents.
He was a brave Vietnam veteran, a helicopter pilot, a newspaper editor, a long-time Rotarian, and a talented actor. Soap opera fans remember him fondly from his time on the daytime drama "All My Children."

He also shared a memorable onscreen moment with the Man of Steel himself. Paul had a speaking role in the iconic 1978 film "Superman: The Movie," which earned a Best Picture nomination.
During the Academy Awards broadcast, a featured clip showed his character directing a news crew. He was managing the team filming Superman rescuing a falling helicopter from the Daily Planet roof.
His connection to his longtime hometown began during a casual flight with an actor friend, Peter Waldren. While airport-hopping, they stopped at Orange County Airport for coffee, where Waldren suggested trying a famous apple pie.
Two years later, Paul and his then-fiancé, Sheila, bought a house nestled deep in the Blairstown woods. They legally tied the knot right in their own front yard.
The couple spent more than 40 years living there full-time. They raised two wonderful daughters, Parker and Kyle, while Paul also had an older son living in Michigan.
Sheila was a brilliant fine artist and fiber artist who deeply inspired everyone around her. She was a dedicated lifelong volunteer and served as a youth leader when her daughters were young.

Sheila was known as a fierce activist for equality who helped shape a whole generation of young women. Neighbors remembered her as an intelligent, joyful leader who refused to be a bystander in life.
However, tragedy struck the family in 2018 when Sheila suffered a debilitating stroke. Paul immediately stepped down from his position on the township committee to become her full-time caregiver.
He spent his final years completely devoted to her comfort while still trying to serve his community. He even worked hard as a proud founder and editor of the local Ridge View Echo newspaper.
Even after her health declined, the stroke did not silence Sheila's vibrant spirit. She remained an active listener who kept her great sense of humor and gave excellent, judgment-free advice.
Their daughter, Kyle Avery, later shared that their family home was always filled with immense warmth. Nobody ever had to wonder about the deep love they all shared.
On quiet Sunday mornings, Paul could often be seen flying gliders from the local Blairstown Airport. He also kept a small aerobatic airplane at Linden Airport for his personal adventures.

The Urgent Front Lawn Rescue That Shocked Eyewitnesses
Everything changed in an instant during the early morning hours of Tuesday. Emergency dispatchers received a frantic call about a major residential fire on Mohican Road.
With time quickly running out, volunteer firefighters breached the burning home just before 1 a.m. They searched through the heavy smoke until they located the couple.
Inside the structure, rescuers discovered Paul and Sheila completely unresponsive and in critical condition. The crew successfully pulled both individuals out into the night air.
The rapid extraction initially signaled a successful rescue from the burning building. Medical teams immediately began administering emergency CPR to both individuals right on the lawn.
A medical helicopter was placed on standby as firefighters officially brought the raging blaze under control at 1:03 a.m. However, the ultimate outcome took an unexpected turn.
The couple succumbed to their injuries shortly after being rescued, according to the initial emergency reports. The sudden loss has left the town expressing total disbelief.
Township committee member Karen Lance said, "I loved them both dearly. This has been an extremely tough day. [..] It's hard to put into words how genuinely kind and supportive they both were."
Following the tragedy, daughter Kyle Avery shared a message on Facebook that reflected the family's loss while also acknowledging the efforts of first responders.
"I’m devastated to share that our parents, Paul and Sheila Garry Avery, passed away early this morning. We loved them so much, and they loved us so much, and nobody ever had to wonder if that was so. We’re grateful to the Blairstown Fire Department for their efforts. Service plans to follow."
Stage performer Lindsay Pfieffer also remembered Sheila's impact, writing, "Your mom was pivotal in nurturing my then-budding feminism. I think of her often and the positive impact she had on my life."
A Community Waiting for Answers
As Blairstown continues to mourn, many residents are still grappling with the events of that early morning.
The most startling part of the tragedy remains the sequence of events inside the burning home: firefighters managed to enter the structure, locate the couple, and pull them out alive. Yet despite immediate lifesaving efforts and CPR, Paul and Sheila Avery died shortly after being rescued.
For a community that knew them as neighbors, volunteers, mentors, and friends, the loss has been especially difficult. Authorities state that the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
