Nancy Pelosi applauded President Donald Trump at the SOTU address, and the Internet has gone wild over her gesture.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pointed gesture as she applauded President Donald Trump's State of the Union address on February 6, 2019, has gone viral.
Social media is flooded with comments and memes both applauding and deploring her action.
“It wasn’t sarcastic. Look at what I was applauding. I wanted him to know that it was very welcomed.”
Pelosi's applause and the smile that accompanied it was judged by observers to be sarcastic, and to mock the President, but the House Speaker has denied it.
The moment came when President Donald Trump called for unity and cooperation for the good of the nation, a sentiment Pelosi obviously found laudable.
Pelosi declared that the original date set for the State of the Union address at the end of January was impracticable and would have to be rescheduled.
Pelosi and Trump have been famously at odds over Congress' refusal to attribute the president the $5,7 billion he demanded to fund the wall on the southern border between Mexico and the US.
The result of the literal Mexican standoff between the President and Congress was the government shut down which started on December 22, 2018.
The 35-day shutdown was the longest in US history and left 800,000 federal employees without a salary.
As the government shutdown continued and affected security details, Pelosi declared that the original date set for the State of the Union address at the end of January was impracticable and would have to be rescheduled.
The alternative, she suggested, would be President Trump sending the SOTU to Congress in a letter.
The impasse over the wall has been temporarily set aside, though it is still unresolved. and the President's appeal for unity also appealed to the House Speaker, as evidenced by her applause.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s has denied any hidden meaning in her applause of the President's State of the Union address, but her daughter believes she knows better.
"Oh yes that clap took me back to the teen years. She knows. And she knows that you know. And frankly she’s disappointed that you thought this would work. But here’s a clap. #youtriedit"
Christine posted an image of her mother clapping her hands at Trump at Tuesday night’s State of the Union address and commented that she knows that expression well.
According to Christine, she was the beneficiary of that gesture several times during her teens, and she recognized her mom's "you tried it" smirk instantly.
Will Nancy Pelosi ground the President for being naughty? Only time will tell.
