Butterball LLC is recalling over 78,000 pounds of raw ground turkey products which were produced in summer 2018. The recall follows reports of associated salmonella cases.

According to the Department of Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) website, approximately 78,164 pounds of food with a sell-by date of July 26, 2018, may be contaminated with salmonella schwarzengrund.

So far, five cases were linked to the products listed in the recall for the North Carolina-based poultry business. Four of them originated from Wisconsin and another from Minnesota.

Authorities are asking persons who may still have the meat in the freezer to throw it out immediately or return it to the point of purchase. The poultry producer stated that the chances of one having the meat are "highly unlikely" due to the date of production though.

Still, Christa Leupen, Butterball spokeswoman reassured consumers:

“Butterball is working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state health departments to encourage the public to identify any potential frozen product and to dispose of it appropriately."

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection have all investigated the known cases so far.

Persons who contract Salmonella usually display "diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product" according to the FSIS.

This typically goes on for four to seven days. Young childer and the elderly are prone to more serious illness due to their lower immune system. Most persons recover, but one should reach out to a healthcare provider if they suspect anything.

In late January, another recall was issued for chicken nuggets produced in November 2018. The Nuggets were reportedly contaminated with rubber and other foreign objects.

Customers complained about the food items but no injuries or illness were reported. Consumers should look for a printed case number “3308SDL03" on “Tyson White Panko Chicken Nuggets” with a best-by date of November 26, 2019.
