Two People Dead and Four Injured After Shooting in UNC Charlotte Campus

Two people were killed, and at least four more were injured after a shooting that took place on the campus of the University of North Caroline at Charlotte on Tuesday. A male suspect is already in custody, police reported.

Police received a call around 5:50 p.m ET on Tuesday reporting an armed person on campus. The UNC Charlotte issued an alert on Twitter, stating shots had been fired and prompting students to “run, hide, fight” and secure themselves immediately.

UNCC Police Chief Jeff Baker said in a press conference that his officers responded immediately and effectively.

They managed to disarm the shooter, and arrested him on the side. They do not have reasons to believe there were more people involved.

“Our officers' actions definitely saved lives. There's no doubt about that," Baker stated.

The chief also confirmed there were two people pronounced dead at the scene. Three more suffered severe injuries and are receiving medical attention, and a fourth one suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The campus was on lockdown for more than four hours, as officers cleared each building on campus. Authorities asked students to stay put and wait for officers to get to them. They also asked students to “be ready to identify yourself” and to call their families.

All activities on campus were canceled, including a scheduled Wacka Flocka Flame concert that would take place at the school’s football stadium.

The rapper tweeted his fans stating he was safe and said he was praying for everyone at the school.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said on Twitter she was in shock to learn of the shooting:

"My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, those injured, the entire UNCC community and the courageous first responders who sprang into action to help others."

The shooter has been identified as 22-year-old history student Trystan Terrell. Police have not identified the victims nor the injured people.

Before the UNC Charlotte shooting, there had been at least 106 mass shootings this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
