After weeks without an arrest, authorities on Monday, December 8, 2025, said that a person of interest linked to the shooting of the New York Jets cornerback is now in custody. This marks the first significant break in the high-profile shooting.

Kris Boyd was shot and wounded on November 16, 2025, just steps away from Sei Less, a sleek bar and restaurant in midtown Manhattan. The 29-year-old athlete had been out for the evening when a confrontation involving his group and another group of men escalated into violence.

Who Is the Man in Custody

The individual, identified by investigators as a 20-year-old from the Bronx, has not been charged in connection with the shooting, according to investigators.

This apprehension comes weeks after the NYPD released surveillance images of a suspected gunman, seeking the public's help in identifying him.

It is, however, unclear whether the man now in custody is the same individual shown in the previously circulated images. Officials also said the individual has a history of four prior arrests, one of which involved a robbery charge from his juvenile years.

Authorities said the man surrendered in Buffalo, New York, more than three weeks after the shooting.

Was Robbery the Motive

Authorities examined whether a possible attempted robbery may have played a role in the verbal exchange. However, sources said the verbal exchange did not escalate to anyone announcing a robbery, even as detectives looked into whether Boyd's necklace could have been a potential motive.

In a twist that has only deepened the mystery, a $185,000 watch was recovered at the scene, and no one has claimed it, sources said. Investigators have also continued to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.

According to sources familiar with the case, when Boyd and his group left the bar, they encountered a group of men who began verbally insulting them, questioning their clothing, and asking whether they thought "they're better than us."

Meanwhile, CBS reported that the dispute between the two groups turned physical before one person drew a gun and fired twice, striking Boyd in the abdomen.

According to the outlet, police said surveillance footage captured the suspected shooter fleeing the scene on foot, appearing to speak on a phone before entering a white BMW roughly two blocks away.

Where Is Boyd and How He's Doing

Boyd was first listed in critical condition following the shooting but was later discharged from the hospital. However, he subsequently suffered a setback and returned to the hospital, reportedly revealing the complication on social media.

"Please bear with me, I haven't been in communication much. ... I was released but had to return to the hospital due to my health issues. ... I love and appreciate everyone of y'all dearly who has prayed/reached out even if I can't get back to you," Boyd reportedly wrote. "Head HIGH. God is not done with me yet!"

More than three weeks after that November shooting, the investigation has shifted but remains unfinished, with key questions about motive and identity still unresolved as Boyd continues his recovery.

Captured by bystanders and later reposted by local social media outlets, the video shows a large crowd of officers, onlookers, and what appeared to be friends of Boyd huddled around the injured athlete as he lay motionless on the pavement.

In the gut-wrenching clips, first responders are seen urgently working to stabilize Boyd. The atmosphere is tense and eerily quiet, with bystanders standing just feet away, some in shock, others filming, as uniformed officers try to keep the scene under control.

At one point, paramedics gently lift Boyd onto a stretcher, carefully securing him before wheeling him toward a waiting ambulance.

A second video, filmed from across the street, shows the scene moments later as police established a perimeter. Officers are seen setting up traffic cones and draping yellow caution tape across the road, their flashlights scanning the ground for evidence as crime scene investigators work amid the neon-lit backdrop of Midtown's nightlife.

What the New York Jets Said

The wide cordon and growing police presence suggested the seriousness of the investigation — and the uncertainty surrounding the identity of the shooter.

As footage of the aftermath continued to spread across social media, the New York Jets acknowledged the incident with a brief public statement. The team opted to remain measured and cautious in its initial response.

"We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time," a Jets spokesperson told CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones.

The National Football League (NFL) has also refrained from making any formal statement regarding the shooting. However, a league official confirmed to CBS Sports that it has been in contact with the Jets organization. Neither party has indicated whether the incident will lead to any immediate procedural actions or further investigation on the league's part.

As investigators continue to sort through evidence and unanswered questions, the case remains active, with authorities working to determine what led to the gunfire and whether charges will follow.

For now, the focus remains on accountability and healing, as Kris Boyd recovers and a city awaits clarity on a night that left lasting scars well beyond a single Midtown sidewalk.
