The identities of the victims killed in Monday's shooting in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood have come into focus as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the attack.
According to CBC News, the shooting left a Montreal police officer, a civilian, and the suspected gunman dead. Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher said another officer was seriously injured and remains in stable condition, while a civilian suffered minor injuries.

The Victims' Identities Added New Questions to the Investigation
The two victims publicly identified were a police officer responding to the emergency and a 68-year-old civilian.
Authorities have not said whether either victim was specifically targeted, selected at random, or became involved as the attack unfolded. Police have also not publicly identified the suspect.
The Officer Killed During the Response Had Served Since 2021
In a statement posted to Facebook, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal identified the fallen officer as Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane.

According to the SPVM, Benredouane was 34 years old and had served with the department since 2021. The police service said he died "in the performance of his duties protecting the population" during the intervention in Côte-des-Neiges.
SPVM also described his death as "a great loss to our organization" and said his "sense of duty, dedication and professionalism will always be remembered."
The department also announced that its flags would be lowered and invited members of the public to send condolences to the officer's family and colleagues.
The second victim's identity emerged hours later, after a period of confusion that left his family searching for answers.
The Civilian Victim's Family Spent Hours Searching for Answers
According to the Montreal Gazette, the civilian victim was identified as Michael Mizrahi, 68. The newspaper reported that confusion surrounded Mizrahi's whereabouts in the hours following the shooting.
Rabbi Barak Hetsroni of the Jewish General Hospital told the Gazette that rumors circulated suggesting Mizrahi had been taken to a hospital and was still alive. Those reports later proved inaccurate.

According to the Gazette, Mizrahi's son contacted Hetsroni while trying to locate his father. The two later went to the scene, where Mizrahi's identity was confirmed.
Rabbi Mendel Raskin, who told the newspaper he had been Mizrahi's rabbi for more than 30 years, described him as a generous and respected member of the community. "Everybody loved him," Raskin said.
The publication also noted that Mizrahi sold suits for a living and had immigrated from Lebanon before later living in Israel and eventually settling in Montreal. He is survived by a son in Canada and two daughters in Israel. A prayer service in his memory was held Monday evening.
While investigators have identified the victims, the exact sequence of events that led to their deaths remains unclear.
Video and Witness Accounts Show How Quickly the Shooting Escalated
While investigators have released few details about how the confrontation began, video and witness accounts offer a glimpse into the violence that unfolded.
According to CBC News, which verified a video circulating online, the footage lasts approximately 58 seconds and contains at least 29 gunshots.
Two officers are initially visible before one appears on the ground after gunfire erupts. At one point, a person near the camera can be heard shouting, "He's hit! He's hit!"

Another witness, Danny Wilk, said he heard an initial gunshot followed by several more before taking shelter inside a nearby pizzeria. Wilk said he saw a man he believed was the shooter and described him as wearing military-style clothing.
The Associated Press also reported comments from construction worker Jacob Coutu, who said he heard several gunshots before police arrived in large numbers.

Damage visible on a nearby building offered a reminder of how intense the exchange of gunfire was during the shooting. CBC News reported that video verified by the broadcaster captured at least 29 shots in less than a minute as police confronted the suspect. | Source: Getty Images
"We saw cops getting in a gunfight, getting shot down," Coutu told the publication. He estimated hearing between 30 and 40 shots.
While video footage and witness accounts shed light on how the shooting unfolded, authorities have released far fewer details about the suspect and what may have motivated the attack.
