Both leaders later attended a garden party, where guests included former Olympic diver Tom Daley. Still, one brief moment soon drew particular attention.

Donald's Gesture Raises Protocol Questions, Expert Says It May Signal More

As the group moved inside, Trump briefly tapped Charles on the shoulder. The gesture is widely seen as breaking royal protocol, which discourages initiating physical contact with a monarch.

Though subtle, it quickly became a point of discussion. Body language expert Judi James reportedly said the movement could also be seen as a sign of affection.

She described it as "a more political gesture" and even "the first real gesture of active, 'special' friendship" compared to Trump’s more reserved demeanor during their previous meeting in September 2025.

Amid Donald's gestures, Charles appeared unbothered. Judi noted that he has often seemed more relaxed about such traditions than his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Judi described the touch as restrained, "a rather polite touch to steer Charles inside." Still, it added a layer of intrigue to the formal setting. Another quiet exchange offered further insight.

While the meeting offered moments of warmth and subtle intrigue, it unfolded against the backdrop of a recent shooting in Washington that had clearly shaped Charles' concern.

Gunfire Sparks Panic at the Event

As previously reported, the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, DC, began as a polished evening of politics and media but quickly unraveled into panic when gunshots shattered the calm.

Donald was rushed offstage at the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday evening, after shots were fired outside the ballroom.

Inside, the annual media gala had been in full swing, with top administration officials in attendance. Within moments, Secret Service agents moved quickly to secure the area and protect those inside.

Outside the event, the situation escalated when the suspect attempted to push past security. Authorities said he "got off a couple shots" and struck a Secret Service agent wearing a bulletproof vest before being quickly apprehended. The Secret Service agent injured during the incident received medical treatment and was later discharged.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the details, adding that they were still trying to pin down his motive. However, he said it seemed that the suspect's targets were members of the administration. Inside the ballroom, panic spread as attendees realized what was happening just outside the venue.

Suspect's Background and Cross-Country Journey

Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. In recent years, Cole became more politically active, according to information his sister, who lives in Rockville, Maryland, shared with authorities.

His involvement included joining The Wide Awakes, a left-leaning group whose name references 1860s anti-slavery activists who supported Abraham Lincoln's presidential bid. Federal Election Commission records also show that he contributed $25 to Kamala Harris's presidential campaign in October 2024.

Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives found that he purchased a .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol from a Southern California store on October 6, 2023. He later bought a 12-gauge shotgun from another gun shop in his hometown of Torrance on August 17, 2025.

Both purchases were made legally and required background checks through the FBI, confirming that he was not flagged as wanted, under a restraining order, or a convicted felon. After making these plans, investigators say Cole traveled across the country by train, moving from Los Angeles to Chicago and eventually to Washington, DC.

He checked into the same downtown hotel hosting the high-profile dinner attended by Donald and other officials. He arrived armed with the .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol and 12-gauge shotgun.

A Chilling Note Comes to Light

Before the attack, Cole allegedly sent a written message to family members, referring to himself as the "Friendly Federal Assassin" and expressing anti-Trump sentiments. The note began, "Let me start off by apologizing to everyone whose trust I abused."

The message outlined several general complaints that may have guided investigators toward a possible motive, including frustration over conditions in detention facilities and a remark that seemed to label Donald a "traitor."

It also reportedly outlined Cole's intent to target administration officials and included the stark admission, "I don't expect forgiveness." The note included apologies to his parents, colleagues, and students.

It also indicated that law enforcement was not his primary target, but he suggested that he would have been willing to confront anyone in his way if necessary.

In the message, he framed his actions as consistent with his interpretation of Christian beliefs, arguing that failing to act in the face of others' oppression amounted to complicity. He ended the note with strong anger toward the administration, saying, "I experience rage thinking about everything this administration has done."

After the message surfaced, his brother alerted the New London Police Department in Connecticut out of concern, while other relatives also contacted law enforcement agencies. Authorities are also reviewing his social media activity and speaking with family members to better understand his motivations.

Donald Trump Reacts After the Incident

Despite the chaos at the event, the president, Melania, and members of the Cabinet were unharmed. In a news conference following the incident, the president said that when he heard the noise, he hoped it was a tray, but it turned out to be a gunshot sound.

Still, he noted that "Melania was cognizant," adding that she knew immediately that it was a "bad noise." The president went on to say that he and the first lady love the country but also recognize the risks that come with his job as the president and hers as well.

"I do it for the country. I am not doing it for any other reason," he said. Donald also praised the Secret Service for doing a great job. He said the suspect had charged a security checkpoint and was "taken down" by the Secret Service.

He confirmed that the Secret Service agent who was shot was in great shape and high spirits. "We told him we love him and we respect him. And he is a very proud guy. He is very proud of what he does, Secret Service agent," noted Donald.

Donald then described the attacker as a "very sick person" and a "thug" who had attacked the US Constitution. Providing reassurance, Donald said the injured Secret Service officer was saved by his vest and was "doing great."

He added, "As you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill." The president also remarked that the attack underscores the urgency of the White House ballroom plan, adding that there was a need to fast-track the bulletproofing project.

Donald Trump also called for unity in the aftermath. He said, "In light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our differences peacefully." When asked whether he believed he was the intended target, Donald replied, "I guess."
