As he approaches his 80th birthday, President Donald Trump is once again facing public scrutiny over his health after another visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center — one he later addressed personally online.

President Donald Trump spent roughly three and a half hours at Walter Reed in Bethesda, Maryland, on May 26, 2026, for what the White House described as a six-month physical.

It was his fourth publicly announced medical exam since beginning his second term and his third medical checkup in approximately 13 months, separate from a dental appointment he had in Florida just a few weeks prior.

Inside the Visit

While at Walter Reed, Trump also met with troops stationed at the facility, which is commonly used for more advanced medical procedures that cannot be performed at the White House, including MRIs, CAT scans, and colonoscopies.

The White House had announced the appointment in mid-May, describing it as an annual physical exam.

As of the evening of May 26, a detailed readout of what tests were performed had not been released, with White House officials saying they were still working on it.

The exam came shortly after Trump returned from a summit in Beijing with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, adding to the public attention surrounding his latest medical evaluation.

What an Expert Is Watching For

Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman, a former White House physician who served under Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush, and Barack Obama, and who has written a book on serving presidents, offered insight on the situation.

He said the frequency of Trump's medical visits is consistent with his age and noted that most people approaching 80 see their doctor regularly. When asked what he would specifically be monitoring, he was direct:

Dr. Kuhlman said he would want to see a treadmill test alongside a CAT scan of the coronary arteries to assess heart health.

On cancer, he noted Trump's risk is lower given that he has never smoked and has always been a nondrinker. For cognitive health, he said more advanced testing would be preferable to a short screening.

He also expressed concern about public transparency, noting that Americans may not be receiving complete information about the president's condition.

A Year's Worth of Visible Signs

The scrutiny around this latest visit did not come from nowhere. Over the past year, several physical changes in the president have drawn sustained public attention.

In July 2025, reports said that Trump was found to have chronic venous insufficiency after noticing "mild swelling" in his lower legs.

The condition, common in older adults, causes blood to pool in the veins when small internal valves gradually lose their ability to function properly.

Around the same time, visible discoloration could be seen on the backs of both of Trump’s hands. When questioned about the marks by a reporter, he said he had scraped his hand against a table and applied cream to the area afterward.

He has also separately attributed the discoloration to frequent handshaking and his habit of taking a higher daily dose of aspirin than typically advised, which can make a person more susceptible to skin marking.

Then, in early March 2026, a rash appeared on the right side of the president's neck, rising above his collar and stopping just below his ear, visible during a Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House on March 2.

His physician, Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella said Trump was using a widely used cream as a preventative skin treatment and that the redness was expected to last a few weeks.

Barbabella did not specify what condition the treatment was for, and the White House did not provide further details at the time.

Critics and commentators have also flagged two recurring behavioral patterns: the president has been photographed with his eyes closed during daytime meetings on several occasions.

He has also frequently shared social media posts well after 1:00 a.m. According to Dr. Kuhlman, consistently getting very little sleep can negatively affect both physical and mental health.

His Doctor Has Told a Different Story

Despite the public questions, Trump's official medical assessments have consistently presented a reassuring picture. Barbabella stated in a memo following an October 2025 Walter Reed visit that Trump was in exceptional health, with strong cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and physical performance.

He also noted that Trump's cardiac age was approximately 14 years younger than his actual age.

An April 2025 annual physical found him fully fit to serve as commander in chief. That assessment noted he had lost 20 pounds since a 2020 examination and maintained an active lifestyle.

Barbabella's position, maintained across multiple statements, has been that Trump remains in excellent overall health.

What Trump Says About His Own Health

The president has never been shy about offering his own perspective. Speaking from the White House on May 11, 2026, Trump joked that he feels the same as he did 50 years ago and suggested his fast-food diet may somehow be helping him stay healthy.

He also joked that he exercises for approximately one minute a day.

Donald Trump's preference for McDonald's and fast food is long established. He recently acknowledged he tends to avoid wearing a bulletproof vest at public events, saying he did not want to appear heavier than he is.

What He Said After Leaving

After returning from Walter Reed Medical Center on May 26, Trump sought to reassure supporters with a post on Truth Social, saying his latest physical examination had gone well and thanking the doctors and staff before heading back to the White House.

The White House said it is still working on a more detailed medical readout, and whether those results will ultimately be made public remains unclear.
