King Charles III and Queen Camilla Visit NYC's 9/11 Memorial with an Unexpected Escort — Photos
The British royals made a solemn visit to New York City's 9/11 Memorial, meeting with families and first responders in an emotional stop. Their unexpected escort drew attention, especially after photos from the visit began circulating.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited New York City's 9/11 Memorial during their U.S. trip, marking a solemn and personal moment. But one detail stood out: who was guiding them through the historic site?

At the National September 11 Memorial & Museum on April 29, 2026, the couple paid tribute to victims and met with families and first responders, listening as attendees shared their experiences of that day.
According to CBS News, Memorial President Beth Hillman explained the meaning behind the white roses placed on victims' names. "There's a rose placed in the name of everyone who has a birthday on each day of the year," she said.
The visit included conversations with people directly affected by the attacks. Among them was Mark Desire, a medical examiner who was injured on 9/11 and returned to work the next day. Beth described these exchanges as "very powerful."

The moment also echoed a past royal tribute. In 2010, Queen Elizabeth II opened a memorial garden in Lower Manhattan honoring the 67 people from the United Kingdom killed in the attacks.
Still, one detail drew public attention: expected political figures did not join the royal couple, not President Donald Trump nor First Lady Melania Trump.
Instead, as reported by CBS News, they were escorted by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, who guided them to the edge of the reflecting pools. The group spoke briefly before the king and queen laid flowers in tribute.

The escort quickly drew reactions online. On Facebook, one commenter asked, "Is that Bloomberg with him?" Another wrote, "Bloomberg is the only one that deserves to meet the royals."
On Instagram, reactions continued. "Why are they with Mike Bloomberg and not the mayor?" one person asked.
Another responded, "Because he become the Mayor in Nov just shortly after 9/11 so he's most equipped to explain and walk them through the memorial site. And lord knows Trump doesn't know about history and that historic day [sic]!!!"
But before this solemn tribute, the royal couple's U.S. visit had already made headlines, after Donald briefly broke protocol with a familiar gesture. At the same time, Melania was seen sharing polite words with the king, later analyzed by a lip reader.

As previously reported, Donald welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the White House on April 27, for a high-profile visit that appeared smooth at first glance. But one brief exchange between the leaders quickly shifted the focus.

King Charles III Shares Words After White House Incident
Charles struck a warm but measured tone upon arrival. According to The Mirror, he was reassured that Donald was unharmed following the reported shooting during the White House Correspondents' Dinner on April 25.
He was reportedly "greatly relieved" that the president was safe, and Buckingham Palace said the visit would go ahead with minor adjustments.
The royals appeared relaxed as they were greeted by Donald and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump.

Both leaders later attended a garden party, where guests included former Olympic diver Tom Daley. Still, one brief moment soon drew particular attention.
Donald's Gesture Raises Protocol Questions, Expert Says It May Signal More
As the group moved inside, Trump briefly tapped Charles on the shoulder. The gesture is widely seen as breaking royal protocol, which discourages initiating physical contact with a monarch.
Though subtle, it quickly became a point of discussion. Body language expert Judi James reportedly said the movement could also be seen as a sign of affection.

She described it as "a more political gesture" and even "the first real gesture of active, 'special' friendship" compared to Trump’s more reserved demeanor during their previous meeting in September 2025.
Amid Donald's gestures, Charles appeared unbothered. Judi noted that he has often seemed more relaxed about such traditions than his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Judi described the touch as restrained, "a rather polite touch to steer Charles inside." Still, it added a layer of intrigue to the formal setting. Another quiet exchange offered further insight.
Lip Reader Reveals Melania's Words to the King
As reported by the same publication, lip reader Jeremy Freeman analyzed the exchange between Melania and Charles during their greeting, which appeared polite and composed.
According to Jeremy, Melania said, "So pleased to see you." She then added, "I'm really delighted."
