Police in Shreveport, Louisiana, responded to reports of a shooting involving multiple victims, as reported by NBC News. By the time officers secured the scene, eight children had been killed, and two women were injured.

Authorities identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins, the children's father.

Officials said seven of the children were found inside the home, while an eighth was discovered on a back roof. A teenager was also injured after falling from the roof but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the New York Post, the victims were later identified as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5.

Two women survived the shooting, including Elkins' wife, Shaneiqua, who sustained a gunshot wound to the face, and another woman believed to be his girlfriend.

Investigators said the case appeared to involve a family-related incident. "We know it's domestic in nature, we know his wife is involved, and she is the mother of at least seven of the children, with the eighth being a family friend," a police official said.

Authorities said multiple firearms were used, including a small-caliber handgun and a rifle-style pistol. Police also reported that many of the children were shot while asleep, most sustaining gunshot wounds to the head.

Officers later confronted Elkins at the scene and fatally shot him, bringing the immediate threat to an end.

Authorities said the motive and full sequence of events remain under investigation.
